Do our dipsticks read low?

Seem to remember a thread discussing this, but can't find it now. When the car was brand new, the dipstick read roughly less than a 1/4 down on the etched side. Didn't drop a bit during break-in, and in it went at 3800 or so for the first change. Next day checked on the level and it read the same 1/4 more or less down. Anyone else noticed this--is this a normal reading for our convoluted sticks?

Our dipsticks do suck...bad design. I hope you guys are remembering to check them at least 15-20 minutes after driving the car...or when its completely cold..that will give you the most accurate measure.

Your not going to loose 1/4qt in one day, so I say no to it being burned.
Sounds like when they serviced it, they didn't fill all the way.
When my Dealer does service and I check later or next day, it's right on the F mark. It's 5.0 quarts when the filter is changed, according to my owners manual under capacities.
Maybe their bulk oil fill gun is out of calibration when they set it for 5qts, idk.
If your oil level isn't decreasing between oil services, as you stated earlier, running at 1/4 qt down is nothing to worry about.
If your dip stick reads like BrocksG's...then I'd worry. Thats about 2+ quarts low. Better get some oil in there son.
And yeah...do what other ppl say here as to when the time to check. Manual says wait more than 10 minutes. I check mine when cold and been sitting overnight.

Yes, it's normal. 5 qts will put it about 1/8" to 3/16" from the high mark.

That's what I'm thinking too, or maybe it's just the way mine reads. The fact that it never changed from that during the first miles on the car, and then read the same after the change does reinforce that conclusion. Also doesn't look like I'll have to worry about the oil buring ailment. And, I check both oil and tires every two weeks, and always in the morning after an all night stay in the garage.

I don't know how any of you guys can read the damn dip stick. It takes 3 minutes to take the dip stick out, then another 15 minutes to put it back in. While the dip stick is out you are wondering what the hell you are looking at.

Hey Nissan engineers........ what the heck were you guys smoking when you designed the damn thing?
