What kind of engines last longer? Ones with with Automatic Transmission or ones with Manual Transmission?

I'm planning to get a MT '04 G35C, but im having reservations because of the engine in the long run. What do yall think?

 

Neither. Well-treated and maintained engines last longer. An MT is probably marginally rougher on the engine (jerkier transitions in resistance), but you can pop the AT in manumatic and drive it around at redline all day in 100 degree weather on oil that should have been changed 30,000 miles ago, and do plenty of damage. Revving any engine hard is likely to slightly decrease its longevity. On the other hand, why buy this car if you're not going to drive it hard?

Now, automatic *transmissions* are definitely lasting longer than manual so far (based on a few MTs needing replacement transmissions), but we only have one year of empirical evidence so far.

I doubt there would be much difference in longevity of either engine. Just maintain whatever you get properly and it'll last long enough.

i have never known that to be true. On the contrary, i have owned both automatics and manuals. The last manual i had was at 170k miles with totally original motor, transmission and clutch when i sold it and it drove almost like new. I never had an automatic last anywhere NEAR that long.

I've read some reports and studies on manual vs. automatic transmission. It showed that manual transmissions lasted a lot longer then automatics. Automatics contain more moving parts and unnecessarily shift at times.
The average daily driven manual transmission only needed a clutch adjustment and a clutch replaced at the most. Automatics with not even half the life as that manual needed to be totally rebuilt.

I would think using an automatic in manual mode would even cause more wear.

Well it's like anything else, MT imposes fewer compromises upon performance. With ATs you need to worry about maximum rpm and horsepower load (it is widely rumored that the AT can handle 480 hp or so, but who knows). You also need to worry about whether the computer will screw up. I've read that some AT 350Zs are bouncing off the rev limiter in "drive" while flooring it after installing big power superchargers, because the computer can't compensate for the quick acceleration. Others don't report this problem, and there's always manual mode to fall back on either way.

Other than that, there's no bigger difference than usual. The one mod where ATs might have an advantage is with nitrous. It's much easier to screw up and detonate on a MT, whereas you can just keep the AT floored.
