I'm really scared about this car!!

I just posed a week ago about choosing between the TL and the G35 coupe. I just put in the order for my G35 coupe this weekend, which should be here in early Feb. Thanks for all who helped on that decision, btw! After test driving the TL for over an hour, I realized I liked the handling, style, speed and nav from the G35 way too much to give it up for the TL.

Anyway...the only problem now is that I've been reading about all these transmission problems with the g35-c. Can someone give me a real percentage of g35-c owners who have problems with their transmissions?...or any other problems with the clutch, etc? I understand that people probably discuss problems a lot more on forums than anybody else, but, wow...I can't even look down through 5 posts w/o reading about the tranny problems, and how the g35 is no good in the snow. Am I just being paranoid, or is this an insanely high-maintanence car?

Thanks!

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

Added to my last post...It seems like this g35 is going to cost on average $1000-2000/year to maintain. Do you all think that's a good estimate? And how do you think the maintanence of other cars in its class, such as the TL, compare?

when youre walking out every morning to the coupe, you really wont care if it costs alittle more than a TL to maintain. A TL is a fantastic car, but you'll love the G. Love is never cheap

as for costs, you will pay alittle more for insurance and rubber will be needed more often if you push the car. Thats just the price of having that grin on your face.

I'm going on 6 months with $0 cost to date. I'm not sure what you're talking about with $1000/year. I'm guessing a set of tires will go 1.5-2 years with a replacement cost of $1000, while all other maintenance is being picked up by my Infiniti dealer. Get them to include oil changes and services, its one less hassle to deal with.

As far as transmissions....if it breaks, they replace it. What worries can you have with a policy like that? I've had 0 problems with the tranny and I think I drive it a bit hard. Don't worry a damn bit about any potential problems, just get it, drive it and enjoy it! (But the TL's nav definately kicks our nav's *** - its all in the voice recognition feature!)

My G should be here some time next week. I almost have a heart attack every time I see the post on problems. I can only hope that there is more information that those person are not telling in their post that are causing those problems.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

the insurance cost for my G coupe is actually a few bucks cheaper than the previous car ('02 CL Type S).
and I've been consitently getting around 22 mpg city/hwy combined...and the hwy driving isn't whole lot better than city driving in los angeles area...the commute is just horrible.
my point is the overall driving cost of G is not bad at all.
and on top of that, the driving sensation is almost priceless. ^^
you'll love your G just like most of us here for sure.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

There is no conclusive evidence that the 5AT or 6MT tranmissions on the G35 are overrepresented in failure rate over industry standards. Do not take anything you read on any internet forum as representative of the general populous. The people who participate avidly or even casually on these types of communication platforms are definitely not a cross-section of the entire public sector of G-owners, nor does the quantity of problems and/or related topics provide an accurate measure of the incidence of failure of any specific part or parts.

All that said, if the tranny breaks, they replace it, and give you a free loaner. No problem in my book. The TL is a great car, it just has very poor exterior styling in my opinion, especially compared to the G.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

Jason (the coolest of names), I wouldn't worry too much about your car. As Shader said above the people whom post here are 1. Enthusiasts for the most part and are gonna be more vocal about problems. 2. Are a very small percentage of the total amount of G's out there.

I personally have had more than what I consider normal amount of issues and parts replaced on my car. However, I understand that for the most part it is my car and not every G. I have had a tranny replaced and various other parts to getting almost to the point where I use the "L" word.

However, I recommended the G coupe to my little Bro and he has had almost no issues with his coupe in the 8 months he's owned it. I also recommended my car to a friend at work and he picked one up about 6 months ago and has yet to have a problem. I still love my car and I understand that my issues at least from what I have observed are not the norm. Also Mine is and 03' and I violated my cardinal rule of not buying a first year model.

Because of that I have experienced issues and things needed to be replaced but all were replaced under warranty, though grudgingly, by the dealer. You will most likely be getting an 04' which should have most, of not all of the bugs worked out. And you know what else?

As mentioned above I get frustrated with the dealers, pissed at parts replaced, but when I walk out in the morning and see that glistening Red beauty I suddenly forget what I was pissed about. Welcome to the club and now I think I'm gonna give my G a kiss. Peace

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

i ran some numbers several months ago and it appeared that less than 1-2% of manual transmission coupes had a problem and the majority of those were the very early build ones.

$1000-2000 per year maintenance? maybe only if you follow the insane dealership "maintenance" schedule.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

agree with the previous posters. just make sure you change your oil and don't drive like a mad man(well not all the time). all car models have there lemons, but even if yours is thats why we have a warranty.

as far as $1000 maintence, i don't think so, i've had my car for 6 months with no problems, only bill was oil changes.

Oil changes gas and insurance is all the expenses I have made in the last eleven months, and the way my coupe feels I do not foresee any problems for years to come.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

I assume you're talking about an Acura TL. I had a 2002 TL-S. Great car but the G35 C is even greater.

BTW, Acura had tranny problems. They even extended the warranty to 100,000 miles because of all the bad trannys.

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

I had similar concerns when I was considering my purchase two months ago. As someone mentioned, the first thing to keep in mind is the vocal majority are people who've had issues with their cars. Those that are happy with their cars are too busy out driving them to complain. There are always going to be a few failures for ANY car in the first few months. Statistically I'm pretty confident that the overall numbers are probably insignificant.

Every board I've ever joined including BMW's, Mercedes and Audi boards have ALL had issues with their cars.

Some of the complaints on these boards are also marginal at best. There are going to be some cronic complainers that wouldn't be happy no matter what they're driving. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely people who have REAL issues but for the most part those issues have been something specific to their vehicles and not something that affects all G's.

I just take much of what I read on these forums with a grain of salt. 5000 miles later, I'm still very happy with my decision...Matter of fact, I think I'll go ask my wife if she needs some ice cream or something so I can go to the store

Re: I'm really scared about this car!!

perhaps i've been lucky ( which i don't believe ), but i've had no problems with my coupe which i've had for a year now. the only "problem" was the grease streak tsb and brake light tsb which was all corrected at my first service. so far, i've spent under $300 on maintenance--another $300 coming up for the 15k service but that's it. the main thing though, i don't regret getting the car one bit. my only regret is not getting the nav and premium package---damn i would love to watch dvd's on those long roadtrips: )
