6MT center armrest not closing

I've had my 6MT for a little over a month now, and all of the sudden, my center armrest doesn't stay closed anymore! It's held shut by magnets, but for some reason, they aren't "sticking". Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have a quick fix besides "take it to the dealer and have them fix it". There's really no dealership close by, and I wasn't planning on taking my car to one until the 1st oil change.

Re: 6MT center armrest not closing

Mine closes fine, but squeaks like a rusty hinge. I've looked at how those magnets work, but can't figure out how to stop the squeaking. Anyone else have this issue??

Check your magnets to make sure they are in the "upright" position. The useless handle on the armrest actually moves the magnets to help release them. Make sure that the handle is actually moving...

I would check the alignment as well. I slightly bent mine by leaning on it to reach the drive-through atm. I just bent it back into place and haven't had any problems since. Hope that helps.

mine's begining to do the same, I think one magnet is working but the other one is out of alignment. Everytime I put pressure on the messed up magnet I get a annoying clicking noise. I posted this yesterday

I'm having the same problem too.

When the protruding magnets on top don't align with the recessed magnets below the thing will just flop around all day. I constantly have to bend the rear hinge supports to put the magnets back into alignment.

When the magnets don't align the top protruding parts are gouging the plastic below as I'm resting my arm on it. It's starting to look like crap. I'll try to get some pics in the next couple of days.

I'm not having problems with the magnet, but I do have this ANNOYING squeaking and creaking noises when it's cold outside. It drives me nuts.

Thanks for the suggestions.. I'll take a closer look at it.. I think going with the magnets wasn't a good idea, it should have been a conventional latch. Oh well. I still like the car.

Re: 6MT center armrest not closing

The problem is you pushed it out of alignment when you leaned on it. Happened to me. Just open the armrest and carfully bend it back.

Re: 6MT center armrest not closing

Thanks Merlin,

But the squeaking is coming from the front (maybe the magnet itself area), and not from the hinges.
It only squeaks when I rest my elbow, and the noise comes from the front part of the armrest.

Re: 6MT center armrest not closing

The squeaks originates from the release lever at the front of the arm rest. Try squeezing the lever repeately ... you should be able to replicate it. I was able to remedy this about a month ago by disassembling the entire deal and silicone paste the entire deal. No more squeaks

Re: 6MT center armrest not closing

THX is right. Mine squeaks a lot, and it definitely comes from the latch. THX, can you be a little more specific in how you remedied the problem???
