rattling noise i found the culprit

hey anyone else get that rattling noise coming from the sun roof? its the linning in between the sunroof and the roof (the sealer portion of the glass.) i couldnt figure it out at first and thought it was from one of the inside quarter panels since i have replaced the stock speakers. anyway i realized what it was the other day as i pushed up on the sun roof and it made that same squeeking noise. anyw3ay, anyone have this problem? how do i fix? thanks RacerX

the latest tsb says to clean it with mild soap like dishwashing detergent, Spray 3m silicon spray on a towel, wipe around seal. (open sunroof back, wipe, then close, lift rear, wipe...). Be very careful not to get the spray on your paint, it will stain.

3m part number (TSB states local source - ie NAPA)
Use 3M Silicone Lubricant Plus, Wet Type for
this repair (3M Part Number 051135 – 08877)

Depending on your coupes exposure to the elements, this is a very temporary fix. I have had this done repeatedly.. It lasts at most for 2 weeks on my car. My service writer has elevated the issue to the regional rep and/or engineering.

I suspect nothing short of a new seal material will fix this. My service writer thinks they will come out with a silcone gel that will last more like a month or two. Thats still pretty temporary. My maxima did this too, after 4 YEARS! My coupe did it in 2 months.

I have asked this question a few times here, many others have it too..

I wonder if silicone tape would work.

Re: rattling noise i found the culprit

might.. but it doesnt address the rubber acting like dryrotted already, I've been tempted to use some of my clearbra leftovers and put a strip on the inside. But I'm waiting for an official final answer from Infiniti.

Re: rattling noise i found the culprit

Hi there,
I'm not sure if this is the same noise. My rattle from up around the sunroof is kind of a tinny-vibrating rattle as opposed to a squeaking. Would like to know if this is the same thing as yours. It doesn't happen all the time, and usually is worst when I'm the only one in the car so it's difficult to pinpoint it and drive at the same time.
Thanks!

Are you sure it wasn't the muffler bearings? I was told to check them

Re: rattling noise i found the culprit

Hi Everyone!
This is my first post here on G35Driver.com!
I have a similar kind-of squeeky/rattle noise from the same vicinity. My wife finally figured out that it has something to do with the wire harness that runs into the rear view mirror. When I notice the noise, if I move the wire around a little bit, the noise goes away. I also notice the rubber-on-paint noise when opening and closing the sun roof- I thought it was strange for brand-new rubber to be so noisy...

I use a silicon-based tire dressing and just take a wipe and carefully apply it to the rubber surround of the sunroof. Works for a month or so and then wears off. Annoying but at least it's fixable.

Haven't checked but I assume the wire harness is accessable through the sunroof area?

Re: rattling noise i found the culprit

with my car in the shop for this, I noticed that the coupe has a rubber seal whereas the sedan has a felt lined seal. Not sure what the new sunroof will have, they had to keep the car overnight : /
