Fun project completed this past weekend!

Well...I took the task of removing the orange lens inside the headlamp fixture this weekend. With the help of my good friend and his machine shop, we removed the orange and fabricated new clear lenses (see video). I have put a caption on each picture to make it easier to follow the whole ordeal. I would like to say a BIG thank you to JOENISMO for helping me with this mod!!

We removed the wheels, wheel well liner and bumper to get to these darn headlights!!

Then we used a heat gun to melt the silicone sealant and took the plastic cover off to expose the lens...

We then dremeled the orange out and shaved the remaining edges clean (sorry no pics)

After, we measured the size of the hole for the signal and machined 2 new clear pieces of plastic to replace the orange using an OMAX WaterJet Machine that uses a mixture of garnet and high pressure water to cut through plastic or several inches of stainless steel or aluminum...

This is the schematic on the computer screen we made for the machine to follow

Perfect replacement piece using a ceiling light plastic tile

Here is the finished product, looks so uniform and perfect, I love the look!!

Last but not least, a cool video of the waterjet cutting out a piece (right click 'save target as') Enjoy!!

Looks clean!

I noticed you have the stock rims. Are you driving on stock tires in snow, or are those snow tires?

Re: Fun project completed this past weekend!

If you still have the schematic for the clear lense, do you think it would be possible to make a bunch of those?

I know for a fact that quite a few people here need something like that (myself included of course).

I'd pay any reasonable price you'd want!

Re: Fun project completed this past weekend!

It took about 8 hours for two of us. We can easily manufacture a bunch of them depending on how many people want it. I have the Blizzak LM-22's mounted on my stock wheels. The pilots are not fun at all in the snow, hehe. I wish it was warm here!! It's 30degrees outside now and it's nice and warm comparede to the sub-zero temperatures of last week. Send me an e-mail to "chris@esr-racing.com" and we can talk more about manufacturing a few.

That's awesome, but it seems as though its A LOT of work to do, just to remove the lens.

Maybe you should have spray painted your headlight trim while you were at it, or put some strobe lights in.

Re: Fun project completed this past weekend!

damn, i REALLY like the way that looks.
too bad its too hectic to take apart the headlight just to get that on. i feel uneasy about doing things like that for some reason. if it was easier i would ask for those lenses and buy them from you. other than that, it looks nice on the car. good looks!

Re: Fun project completed this past weekend!

Question: Is it the turn signal bulb that is orange, or is it the lense that creates the orange glow for the turn signal? I thought in some states it was illegal to use white turn signals?

Just wondering on the legality of that setup. I'd like to do the same to mine.

I mean, less than 35% tint is illegal in most places also, but ppl still do that...

Re: Fun project completed this past weekend!

the LENSE is orange, why else would he crack open the entire assembly?

White turnsignals in front are legal as long as they have a reflective amber piece. So in a sense, these aren't street legal.

Quoting narkotic:

"the LENSE is orange, why else would he crack open the entire assembly?"

I wasn't sure if both were orange or if it was just the section that he dremeled out...

Now, it's just a matter of how **** the cop is...
