Uh, you don't do that with a car that has lots of torque, unless you like doing burnouts and going no where fast. You drop the clutch at 4,500 RPMs in my Z06 and all you'll do is smoke the tires and go nowhere. You only launch a Z06 like that if you're on a prepped, hot, and sticky 1/4 mile track with full race slicks on. On the street, with street tires, forgeddaboutit.
The same situation occurs in other high HP, high torque, non-AWD cars. You'll get the same effect in a Viper, a 360 Modena, etc.
As for a stock S2000 pulling a 4.8 0-60, I would like to see that magazine article. Which magazine was it?

Re: SPANKED!!!
When people who don't know cars so well ask me what car I drive, I just tell them "I drive a black car". =P
If they know a bit about cars or like enough to hold their own, I say "Infiniti G35 Coupe".
If they know a lot, I just say "G35 Coupe".
But whatever the crowd, the person usually has to see it before they say, "Hey, nice car !!"

Re: SPANKED!!!
Man those new s2000 are QUICK! They have the lbs of torque in the right spot now, and a lower redline to make that power effitiently!
So that is why you were probably spanked! dont feel bad, s2k are so underated and the 04s are even faster, i saw one hit 13.8s over and over....
and i dont know which clk500 ur talking about....have no clue about that one.

Re: SPANKED!!!
Oops, my last post here belonged on a different thread....doh !!!
But yeah, the S2000 doesn't do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, that's giving it WAY too much credit. I once raced one in my dad's E430 4Matic (0-60 in 6.6 seconds) and up the 30 we were neck and neck and then he SLOWLY started walking away from me, and so I backed off. The S200 is fast if you drive it right, but it's never ridiculously fast...0-60 time of 5.9 seconds.

Re: SPANKED!!!
Well seriously.... the 2004 s2k was hitting 13.8's. i know the 2000-2001 are pretty much crap, but when the 02-03 came out, they had a way better clutch, and they fixed all of the manufacture problems.
And i have also heard some do 0-60 in 5.4 - 5.8. Believe me, i wouldnt state these times if they were not true. I am not biased to the s2000, or any car for that matter. (except GTRs i am a little biased) But those are some honest times. it depends on the year dude. So im not giving any car more credit, but they are faster than a G. IF THEY CAN DRIVE AN S RIGHT. alright peace whizzles

Re: SPANKED!!!
Yeah...you're right about dropping the clutch at 4500. My point was that most cars (perhaps not with torque monsters like Corvettes) that you need to raise your RPMs somewhat in order to get a good launch.
The 4.8 (could have actually been 4.9, I don't know or care enough to pull out the mag just to cite it) was a rarety, but Road & Track did publish it. My point was that the S2000 can pull low 5 second runs to 60 MPH.

Re: SPANKED!!!
i just raced my friend's 02 S2000, and this was my impression:
from a 3rd gear run-he jumped a car length and by 5th, i started to pull on him and if i had rode out 5th, i would have passed him.
from a second gear run (@4000 rpms)- i jumped 2 cars most likely cos of the torque advantage, and by beginning of 4th, he started to pull on me, but that was the end due to trafic.
so my conclusion would be that if had continued the race thru at most 5th gear, it would be a back and forth race starting with me ahead, him jumping a car by 4th, and me passing him by middle of 5th, i think its most likely due to the gearing of the cars, as the S2 is more aggressively geared than the G.

Re: SPANKED!!!
The s2000's 3rd gear is it's meat-and-potatoes gear. Most races in which an s2000 wins involves a change of tides while the s2000 is in 3rd gear.
However, at speeds above 100 mph, the s2000 is usually at a disadvantage due to its poor aerodynamics. That windshield is way to vertical (great for roll-over protection, but bad for wind and bugs).
