Post New purchaser Questions::help

Hello everyone I'm kind of new here, and interested in a 04 G35 that is for sale at this dealership I work for, the car is a 6spd and has 33k miles, my price for the car is $22k. It looks great sounds great and only had 1 owner....the only thing that is holding me back now is that the terrifying stories I have been reading about the Oil consumption problems...I don't have a Infiniti dealership around here and don't want to be having to go back and forth. So to make sure i walked up to the car today and got the VIN number and contacted the Infiniti dealer that the car was originally purchased from and asked the lady if this vehicle had any major history especially about oil consumption and the only thing she told me that she had seen was that the right hand drive speaker was replaced. So my question to you guys is that what are the chances that this car could still have an oil consumption problem? How could i be sure?Could it start to have the problem after 33k miles? any kind of help right now would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot

TurK

It's difficult to know without knowing the car's oil history in more detail, so your guess is as good as ours, but you could do things like a compression and leakdown test to determine the condition of the motor. Do you have the oil change records? The dealer should be able to provide that to you.

FWIW, my 04 has had no consumption issues to date (almost 3 years, 16K miles), although I tend to check the oil fairly religiously and change it out inside of every 6 months (synthetic).

alright so your suggesting that i should call back and see if they have any oil change records and also ask the dealer to have a leak down test and compression?

could U not contact the previous owner, I thought carmax could provide that information, or even the dealer.

I have contacted the dealer and they told me it had no bad history...only thing was the speaker....is this as good as talking to the owner...im not sure...but to me it seems like if he was picky enough to drive 1.5hrs to get one speaker fixed im sure he would of drove for any other problems that the car could of had right? I not sure but I have a good feeling about this car, we'll see..

You shouldn't worry about the oil consumption on 03-04. If i'm not mistaken, only the rev-up engines which are the 05 and up 6MTs has the oil consumption problems

Come on Turk, jump in and join the G crew. You've asked all the right questions now it's time to make up your mind. Find a low mileage '04
and catch the mod bug with the rest of us. Any further questions go to
Search....ask the question and you'll have no problem finding the answers.

I've been thinking of getting coupe too but reading the problems in some of these posts has put me off. The nearest dealer is a long way off and I mean long so serious problems are a real deterrent. Would a Nissan dealer be able to do the warranty work or would I definitely be looking at shipping it to the Infiniti dealer. I'm in Canada and dealerships are not that plentiful.

1. The G35 is not perfect, but has far fewer problems than its comparable competitors, such as BMW or Audi. I wouldn't be scared off by any internet issues. The relatively few people who have major issues are the most vocal, and the rest are the happy silent majority.

2. If it's warranty work, it needs to go to an Infiniti dealer.

Turk, welcome to the forum. I own a 04 AT Coupe with a little over 40,000 miles. I never had a problem w/ Oil consumption, I think it is rare to hear of this problem with the 03-04 models......

If you like the car, and it only has low mileage, I say go for it, and use the remainder of your factory warranty to repair/replace anything you think needs replacing...

Good luck and welcome aboard

^ +1. don't worry so much. You'll still have plenty of warranty left should something be wrong with the car, especially the powertrain warranty

Turk, I have 54k miles and no oil issues. ****** it up and you'll actually enjoy the 1.5 hr drive to the dealership for any warranty work you probably won't need.
