Driving a 5AT

A couple dumb(sorry) questions I couldn't find searching.

1. If you floor it on a 5AT it shifts at redline right? So if you're at a track it's better to keep it in drive than tiptronic? And if so, does it shift at the redline or rev limiter?

2. Is it bad to overrev on a 5AT in tiptronic mode for the drivetrain? Like lets say 4th gear at 30-40mph. Because I'll notice if I have it in drive mode it is in 4th gear at those speeds (from what I can tell looking at the RPMs) I'm asking because I like to overshift to save gas when I'm in the mood for slow driving (like when I'm tired).

Thanks.

In manual mode, it will NOT shift until U move the selector, IF U don't, it will hit the rev limiter, and basically die till RPM drops about 1000, happens very quickly and really sounds nasty and feels like it too.

so true I've found out. It does redline really fast.

If your racing, you can control it better with tiptronic-- IE find that perfect shift spot right after 6500.

Yes if you do goofy shifts and use tiptronic all the time it will blow your tranny

Mine took a **** at 31k, 30k of those miles were tiptronic

If you are talking at the 1/4 mile track, leave it in auto mode. You can not physically shift as fast as the tranny. Do not pre load the TQ converter as it will actually kill some engine power at luanch as well.

Eh, I should've been more specific. I meant shifting in Drive mode.. I know that you hit rev limiter at manual mode because you have pretty much full control in manual mode. I was just wondering if it shifted at redline or rev limiter during drive mode..

OK - so if your racing:

Leave it in manual mode for your launch. At about 5000RPM - throw it into Auto mode and just drive away. For the AT's and a 1/4 mile - your best brake torquing the car in 1st gear at the line, to get the converter closer to lock up - around 2600-2800 RPM - that is if you can hold it before it spins the tires.

As far as using manual mode, holding the RPM's'
a a little higher and making people think you've got an MT - it wont hurt anything at all, especially in the transmission.

OK, you lost me on this one. If you want to save on gas, you would want the RPM as low as possible (in the highest gear). If you are overreving, you might just as well cut a hole in the bottom of your gas tank.

Um.. what's brake torquing and why do you want the converter to lock up =/ sorry. Do you mean press the gas and brakes at the same time so your RPMs go up but even it out so that your brakes are holding your tires so you don't go forward?

You sure about this? Why would they put tiptronic on stock cars if it blows your tranny at 30k miles if you use that option? Especially considering tiptronic comes on a LOT of AT cars these days.. even altimas..

+1 but definitely leave it in manual mode your whole way through and just learn when to shift your 5AT

Well the main reason I posted this thread is to find out if the drive mode shifts at redline or rev limiter for you.. If it shifts at rev limiter that means it's pretty much shifting at the perfect moment.. I doubt drivers shift at the very perfect moment each gear, especially using tiptronic.. So if it shifts at the rev limiter it's better to let it shift for you is what I'm thinking. But yeah I've been shifting with tiptronic the whole time I had this car so I'm used to the delayed shifting. What made me think about this though is I saw a race between a G35 and Camaro on youtube. G35 lost the first time because he was using tiptronic and won the second time because he used drive mode..
