Power?

As a proud owner of a new g35c, I have a few questions for those of you who have driven yours for a while.

1. Having not rev'd the engine much past 5k, when does the power of the engine make it self known? It doesn't seem like there is much more than 120-150hp on tap at those r's. No passing mini vans until the higher gears. 280? hmm... I'll get back to you after the weekend. 1200 miles; changing the oil/filter; taking the rev's up.

2. Is the short 1st gear bothering any of you? It seems to me that this gear doesn't make good use of the torque of the engine and shifting to 2nd occurs too soon. Like a 1st and a half would be better.

3. Is anyone experiencing any build issues, like rattles or vibrations coming form the plastic panels? Mine has a few, one from the drivers door right next to my ear. Seems like it's between the outer material and the door innerds.

4. Has anyone got a good source for the service manual and how much did you pay for it? My dealer says $259-279, they couldn't tell me if it was a 2 or 3 volume set; hence the 2 prices.CD was $249.

Thanks for any responses-

Re: Power?

does the noise you are experiencing happen with the drivers window partly down about 4 to 6 inches. I have a metal clinking when going over road imperfections. I can also open the door and pull slightly on the corner of the galss and make the same sound.
I took it to the dealer and they will fix it when I have service done. He did say they havn't had any other compliants

Re: Power?

No, the window position doesn't seem to affect the noise. When I put pressure on to the flat part of the door, next to the window, about where my head is, the noise stops.

I haven't experienced the problem you discribed.

Re: Power?

Forget about the break-in period and floor it a couple of times. You'll feel the power.

Re: Power?

come to think of it, 1st gear does seem short- even driving non-aggresively, it always shifts around 3 1/2-4K RPM.

as for rattles, i don't think i have any, but last trip I might have heard something. I don't remember, since that was almost 2weeks ago.

Re: Power?

In the magazines they said the 6MT can go 45 mph at redline in first gear, seems plenty enough for me

Re: Power?

From reading the various posts, I gather there is a big difference in the "tightness" of some new engines. Mine would not rev freely and did seem like it had about 150 HP. Saturns were pulling away from me at lights. (I traded a Jaguar XJR with 370HP and was quite disappointed at first.) I now have 2,300 miles and the engine is very noticably stronger and continues to improve. What seems like a "short" 1st gear (I noticed the same thing) actually seems fine after some more break-in. I had a body noise that seemed to be coming from the gas cap area. Currently, it has healed itself.

Re: Power?

You were getting passed by saturns, WTF were you starting in 3rd or something?

Also, you traded an XKR for a G35c? I love the coupe, but . . . Wall Street got you down or were you just pissed you couldn't get the Machine Gun and Missle options like the Die Another Day XKR?

Just giving you some **** . . . Glad to have a happy high roller among us!

Re: Power?

Thanks for the input Richsqrd, I too am comparing the power to my 350hp Vette, so maybe I should give it a while to "loosen" up.

Re: Power?

No, No, Not XKR, Traded an XJR, that's the supercharged sedan (for black G35,6MT,all optns). Great acceleration, great interior, not a sports car. Not starting in 3rd gear. Starting in 1st, trying my damnedest to keep up with a Saturn I remember in particular, but there were others. New engine would just not rev. It's getting better now, Saturns aren't a problem, I'm working my way up from there.
