Tire wear question

Consider me an "ambassador" from the Nissan 350Z owners . The 350Z experiences a chronic tire wear problem called "feathering" where the inside edge of the front tires wear improperly causing a roaring noise when slowing from 30mph. It's pretty bad, and so far Nissan can't fix it. Since the G35c is pretty much the same car mechanically as a Z, we're wondering if you guys have the same problem??? Thanks!!!

Re: Tire wear question

No, no one has ever reported having feathering issue's on the G35 Coupe.

The G35 coupe use's much softer valving in it's struts vs the Z. I don't think the Gcoupe has alignment specs as aggressive as the Z either.

Also I have 350Z springs and struts on my sedan, I don't have feathering issue's either.

Re: Tire wear question

i have it on mine, but it's not really bad.....yet. I have about 9200 miles and noticed it at around 8500 miles. BUT, my alignment was off, so i suspect that was the cause. I spoke with my dealership about it, as well as the michelin dealer in my area. Of course, neither will really do anything about the tire wear.

Michelin's story is: the alignment was off and there is NO treadlife warranty on the tires. Only a manufacturer defect warranty for problems like tread seperation.

Dealership's story is: They are performance tires, that are soft and noisy. No one really gets more than about 15k miles out of them.

The car is being aligned under warranty.

Edit:
Neither the Michelin dealer or my Infiniti dealer recommened a braek down tire rotation. On the contrary, they both looked at me like i was crazy when i asked about it.

Re: Tire wear question

i have on mine too, i have about 15k miles and noticed it at about 11k, don't live near dealer and had 13k when i took it to be checked ,dealer said needed alignment but i had to pay for it, which i was very disapointed about, they also recomended not to break down rotate even though i would have payed for it

Re: Tire wear question

I am at 12k miles right now and I havne't noticed any wierd sounds or alignment problem.... then again i'm usually blarring music too loud to hear anyone or anything coming from the outside.

I will leave music off on my next run to work tomorrow and listen for this unusual sound you are talking about.

Re: Tire wear question

At 7,500 i had my tires swapped/rotated/remounted/rebalanced and at 10,000 miles i put on the snows.... Now with the michelons, i did notice slight feathering when rubbing my hand on the inside edges of the tires (now the feathered edges are on the outside edges because of rotation/remounting)

This seems completely NORMAL to me, since i remember reading that our suspension has a slight camber angle to them from factory, which would make the inside of the front wheels wear out more quickly...

I believe they call this feathering....am i correct or totally off?

Re: Tire wear question

I thought feathering, was where part of the tread bends up so every other tread it high then low, high low. Its cause by ballence and alignment problems.

Re: Tire wear question

hmm... yeah, its getting oddly worn... for example, if i run my hand the way the tire rolls on the road, i feel that it is rough, just as you explained...
