Dealer invoice for used cars...real or scam?
Dealer invoice for used cars...real or scam?
Alright so recently I bought my G35 coupe used and I helped my gf buy a used Murano. Both times it got pretty heated and when we were leaving they pulled us to their computer screen and showed us what there invoice price was.
For my G35 it showed them making $228 bucks off of me, and later one when I went back to something the sales person even showed me his commission slip showing he only made $75 bucks. With the Murano the guy showed the computer and basicallyl only made $115 bucks.
I didn't believe it at first but after really talking to them they basically said its better for them to move a car out of the lot so they can bring something else in.
Two of my friends says BS, they are making it whatever they showed me is false. What do you guys think or know of ?

Keep in mind the dealer gets a substantial amount back each year for every unit they move off the lot (several grand per car, often)..... So even if they make no money up front, they make money when that check comes at the end of the year.
There is no real dealer invoice for used cars. Because they probably negotiate a diff amount on each trade in they receive. They probably make thousands on trade ins. If they are so easily willing to show you some computer screen then they are lying.
Ask them for the paper work for the previous owner's negotiation

dealer invoice is real esp for cars that they get from trade ins. in order for them to give you a price, they have to work in their invoice price to calculate how much theyre going to make off of you and how much you will be paying monthly, etc. many times used cars are marked up 3-4k but even if they dont make any money up front, both sales people and managers receive bonuses at the end of each period

Look at the difference between trade-in and retail values on kbb.com or edmonds to get an idea of the spreads between what a dealer pays for and sell a used car. Don't forget that dealers also buy at used car auctions and may pay far less than trade-in value for their used cars (many off-lease cars go at auction) and may sell their not so nice or otherwise hard to sell trade-ins at auction.
