Raced a heavily modded Jetta 1.8T

Ran my stock G35 6MT against my buddy's 2002 Jetta 1.8T last night.

He has thing modded up. GIAC chip, 2.5" turbo-back exhaust, bailey diverter valve, N75 valve, and 18" wheels.

We went three times from a rolling start approx. 20 mph. The first time he beat me but I didn't shift well. The second and third time we traded each getting a slight jump at the start, but it didn't seem as if either were pulling away from each other. I chirped 2nd, 3rd, AND 4th gear - it was sweet!

Now, his car's shift points are very much different from the 6mt. He can hit 60 in 2nd gear whereas I need to get into third gear. We only ran up to about 90 mph this time, we'll run again to see what happens up past 100.

I haven't been to the track yet (car is only 2 mos. old) but his best time so far is a 14.0@99.25 with a 2.23 60' time.

Re: Raced a heavily modded Jetta 1.8T

Very interesting. I own an '01 Wolfsburg Edition Jetta with the same engine and GIAC chip but with probably lighter stock BBS 16" rims. Actually his modifications (chip/exhaust) are pretty standard for most Jetta/GTI owners who modify their cars. People who heavily modify their cars put in a Quaife LSD, upgrade the turbo to a larger one, etc. The GIAC chip was installed in about 30 minutes for about $495 and the turbo back exhaust is a bolt-on for a about $500-$600. The N75 valve, Bailey diverter valve do nothing to add horsepower and the 18" rims probably decrease acceleration. Since he's trapping @99 MPH he's likely putting down about 210 HP to the wheels on a car that weighs under 3000 lbs. Stock G35's put down wheel HP in the 230's but weigh 3400 lbs so I could see how he kept up. Next time get him from a stop and he'll drop back from the start and shouldn't be able to catch up. My car dynoed at max torque 217 ft-lbs at the wheel @ 3k RPM with just a GIAC chip; so the power comes on strong pretty fast but it is hard to keep traction. In fact if I floor the pedal while cruising 15 MPH in 1st gear the wheels break loose on me. However, if I try to race from a stop half the time I just spin my wheels, especially in the colder weather. That's probably why your friend shouldn't be able to take you from a start.

Why does everybody race from a rolling start? How come nobody ever wants to race from a stop anymore? I hate the rolling start crap because that doesn't tell you anything. Let's hear about some real races guys. Getting a good launch is hard.
