When the gas ignites before the spark ignites the fuel mixture. Higher octane resist predetonation...or premature combustion. What happens when you have anything that is premature or in otherwords "Not ready yet." You can lead to engine damage but it rare today with the advanced cars that retard the timing. The engine is protecting its self from damage now that it can but before when engines didn't have knock sensors it actually can damage a car's engine. Especially, when you are going up hill under full load and extreme conditions. Just because are cars now are less prone to pinging doesn't mean that you should use a lower octane. Its restricting the car from its full potential.
