I have an 03 Durango for a beater, and use the G just about every 2/3 times a week when I just need to drive to work and not haul anything.
If you want a beater I'd suggest getting and SUV, those things are solid and safe in an accident. I had an 06 Xterra and it was a nice SUV, I got rid of it because I found that the seats were uncomfortable and it didn't have enough space to load cargo in it, other than that is was great!!
If you don't want to go with an SUV you can always get a nice sedan or station wagon. My wife has a passat wagon and the cargo space is AWESOME, almost just as good as the durango.
Good luck!!

I'm not sure what constitutes a "real winter", but I live just north of NY City, and we do have winter. Pirelli snowsports on separate rims have gotten my 03 6MT through 4 winters with no problems. Of course, our roads are plowed, but that still usually leaves a couple of inches of packed snow. This car with snow tires handles better than any front driver with all seasons that I've ever driven in snow.
