Angry Am I Getting Ripped Off? 60,000 Mile Service

Hello,

I have a 2004 G35 Coupe, AT, 61,081 miles on it. I went to my dealer on Thursday, 1/10/08 to get some front break pads replaced. I go to them since they have factory parts and deal with these cars everyday. I haven't taken my car anywhere else for service. I've gotten all oil changes done there and the 15,000 mile service done there as well. Fuel injection cleaning, even got them to replace all 4 of my summer tires for me. Anyway to make a long story short, I think they did not do all the work they promised they would do in the 60,000 mile service. For instance rotating and balancing the tires. I know with the summer tires you cannot do a normal rotate of the tires since the back tires are bigger than the front. But the rep said that is included, so I assumed they would take the wheel off the tire and remount them on the other side (driver to passenger side swap and vice versa.) Well I have a tire plug in one of my front tires, and it seems its on the same side, indicating no rotating was done. Also wheel weights was a part of the itemized list I received, so I imagine the old wheel weights were removed and new ones were added.

My question is this, how can I determine if they did everything they said they would without taking it to a new place. Can I look for specific things? I really want to own these bastards once and for all. They've been punks ever since I bought my car. Unfortunately I kept going. Any help would be appreciated!!

THANKS!!
thehin

You are being ripped off...somewhat.

If you carefully look inside the wheels and along the inner edge, you should be able to see old weights were removed and left marks on the rim and if new shiny weight are stuck on. Balancing is part if the 60k service, which you should have paid for, but not rotation. there is absolutely no rotation on the G (at least stock tires), they can also not be rotated by removing them off the rim. So that part you should not be paying for.

According to service manual, you should have the following done, I recommend the ones with a *, if you have not had them done earlier than 60K (Inspect means look at it thoroughly and replace/repair IF necessary)

Replace Air Filter *
Inspect EVAP Lines
Inspect Fuel Lines
Replace Engine Oil *
Replace Engine Oil Filter *
Inspect Drive Belts
Inspect Brake Lines & Cables
Inspect transmission Fluid
Inspect Steering & Suspension
Inspect Exhaust
Replace In Cabin*

What I have typically done with my Nissans/Infiniti's (last 6 that I have owned) at 60k is:

Replace Engine Oil/Filter
Replace Air Filter & in-cabin micro filter
Replace Brake Pads (if never done before on vehicle) and rotors if really bad
Flush Coolant
Flush Transmission Fluid
Bleed Brakes
Used to replace plugs but now, don't need to until 105k miles
Run 2 cans of injector cleaner with premium fuel and run engine hard
Replace shocks and struts if needed, usually not
Lubricate all hinges and joints
Balancing & Alignment

Typically i have found that doing these things makes the car run very smooth for the next 60k

Every dealer has their own service "Menu"

The only thing required is what is printed in the maintenance manual for your car to keep the warranty...

A dealer will have your car in for thousands of dollars worth of service at your first oil change if you let them...

Usually the "Flushes" like fuel injector flush have a "Spiff" attached to them. Will they help you, some say yes, some say no... can you get the same out of adding a can of fuel injector clean? some say yes, some say no...

Dealers do not rotate tires if you have a wider tires in the back. Well atleast none that i know of and they've never done it for me. I usually go to my local tire shop and every 5k miles, I have them "flip" the tires. When they are balancing the tires, sometimes it is necessary to replace the weights but sometimes it's not.

I know i'm getting somewhat ripped off, after all its the dealer. But the experience they have is unmatched, considering competition infiniti is the largest infiniti dealer ship in NY. For the wheel weights, i noticed old ones were still on but shiny new ones were there as well. I noticed in the hood that the white tank on the left (the one that goes kinda far down, and is connected to the coolant) had little liquid in it. Not sure if this was part of the "topping off" all fluids. Tomorrow when the rain stops im going to check the filters and the dip stick to see if they changed the oil. Thanks for all you replies.

The wheels balancing weights are added or removed "as needed". How much did you pay for the service?

Yes, you got ripped off. There is no need to rotate the wheels. That doesn't accomplish anything and probably why they didn't do it. It's the tires that need to be rotated and that is not possible on the G coupe because of the staggered size. A balancing would be the only thing necessary.

You seem to know how to inspect all the fluid levels yourself so you can just as well have done most of the topping off yourself and saved big bucks.

Did you actually buy tires from the dealer too? If so, please feel free to send me some of the extra money you have burning a hole in your pocket.

Since our Gs wear out the tires on the inside more than the outside, I did request my dealer to rotate my tires by dismounting them and remounting them inside out. Once the service guy understood that that's the only way to rotate coupe's tires they did it no problem. The local shops charged me the same if not more while damaging the rims. Dealer is not always bad.

you should also replace your thermostat @ 60k since it gets corroded in there.

Check for new belts (two), check for new Hoses (upper/lower radiator), check for new fluid in the tranny (brite red, no burnt smell), check the radiator fluid (bright green/no rust), check for new radiator cap, check for new "in cabin microfilter" (PITA, but you want to know), check for new air filter (bright orange), all these things SHOULD have been changed.
