fuel spillage

I was filling up my g over the weekend..don't normally top it off, but this time I tried squeezing out another 1/2 gallon or so...then all of a sudden the fuel came pouring out all over the place and on me!!! I was pretty pissed to say the least...should this happen...isn't there a baffle to keep all the fuel from pouring out??? well I ain't gonna do that again..I lost more on the floor than what I put in!!!

i think most gas pump hoses have a sensor that cuts it off when it gets close to being full, unless you pulled up the rubber sleeve... and kept pumping, if so that's your problem

I think it depends on the gas station. I know that when I fill up at a particular gas station, it starts to spill out before the pump even stops. Needless to say, I have ceased going to that station to fill up.

Wait, you're saying that the pump stopped and then you tried to force more gas in and it overfilled? Isn't that just physics? Sorry it happened. Glad you won't try it again.

Once the pump cuts off automatically, and you try to add or "top off" your tank, the gas will eventually spill over. You need to know how much extra you can squeeze in.

I usually can get about $1.50 more once the pump shuts off. any more, and I'm wearing it as well.

Pain in the A$$ cleaning it off your car, rewaxing, and still smell gas for a couple of days...

yeah usually i fill until it stops, then wait a sec for the gas to go down the tube then fill it up some more until it stops. But one day i went to another station and their sensors didn't work so well, so when i went to top it off it came gushing out. It really depends on the pump and if the sensor work properly. You'll just have to figure out which pumps work and stick to those.

I ALWAYS top off... try letting the gas settle before you try and put more... it also helps if you take out the hose and look in the tank. You can usually see where the gas is. I can normally put 1.50 to 2.00 more. Learned it the hard way too

Recall

There was a RECALL on very early 2003 models for an issue quite similar to this. The dealership did the recall on one of my first maintenance services, and I do not recall the specifics other than it was a problem people had during refueling their Coupes. This may apply to you or may be coincidental.

There's no way you are able to put an additional 2 gallons of gas in the car from the first time it stops.
