under car rattle when shifter in 3rd or 4th??

So rattle #5237 has been discovered and this one's confusing the heck out of me. I heard it today on my way to work when i was in third going about 45mph. It sounded like it was coming right from under the ashtray and so i thought it was my keys that i keep in there. I shifted to 4th and it continued. Then things got strange. The rattle continued regardless of me accelerating or coasting and disappeared whenever but when i moved the shift **** over to the right to shift to 5th it went away. I noticed this so i let it back into the center position and the noise returned. I opened the windows and found out that the noise is pretty loud on the outside as well.

Anybody know what this is?

Cheers.

Not sure about your problem, but I do admit as my car has aged I am hearing weird noises I never heard before. Loud but small chirping when I go over bumps in the rear is my newest one. I cannot figure out WTF it is!!!

possibly an exhaust leak, the rubber hangers that hold the exhaust up could be giving out or need slight adjustment. exhaust too close to sway bar to name a few possibilities.
