i was really low and drove to my friend house to check it out.
i got a screwdriver and used a cloth so i wouldnt scratch the paint and i popped it open...(i had too..i needed gas)

i broke a little white plastic ****. it opens and closes alright now but its not as smooth as before. should i take it into the dealership. or is it not too big of a deal...

Next time that happens, use the keyfob unlock button to see if it unlocks it. It's possible that it was just locked.

Re: Gas cap problem !

In my experience if either door is locked then the gas cap is too. My aftermarket alarm locks the doors on ignition and unlocks when you turn off the car completely. I left the key in once so my GF could listen to music and her door was still locked. Couldn't open my gas cap till she unlocked all the doors.

Read the manual! There's some picky little things in there like that gas cap, spare tire mounting, etc.

Same thing happened to me the first time I went to gas up my car. You need to have the passenger door unlocked. Stand outside your car with the doors locked, press the unlock button twice and you'll actually see the gas door pop out ever so slightly.

Re: Gas cap problem !

same thing happened to me, I was FREAKING out until I thought about trying to unlock the doors. I had the driver door unlocked, but not the passenger. My hunch is that it's tied to the passenger lock. It's silly, but it's avoidable.

Re: Gas cap problem !

Why is it silly? It prevents someone from stealing your gas...

First time I went for a fill, I had the same problem, so I just looked in the manual and it says to unlock the doors. Works well although I prefer opening the gas door via a switch inside like most cars.

Re: Gas cap problem !

Speaking of the actual gas cap thingie... when you guys fill up, do you attempt to hook it into that holder on the inside of the opened gas filler door? Sometimes mine stays there like a good little gas cap, other times it just sort of "pops" out of the holder and rattles against the side of the car. Annoying as heck.

My gas cap has a mind all its own...I try to place it nicely in the holder and the second I turn my head....it jumps right out of there!

My door opens with my pass. side door locked...I don't understand why it wouldn't. maybe its an intermitent problem....2old4this

Re: Gas cap problem !

Well, on my car, the gas tank is unlocked when the driver's door is unlocked.

When I drove a loaner sedan, I had to unlock both doors for it to open.

I wonder if this is tied to one of the BCM programmable options somehow.

Or I wonder if this is a feature of the newer cars

Re: Gas cap problem !

Glad I'm not the only one. Someone who's not lazy like me should get up and complain for them to make a fix for the gas cap holder. It doesn't bother me so much as the fact that when it pops out of the holder it makes a nice little clunk sound onto the side of the car, which, upon closer inspection, hasn't left any marks... yet.
