AT Transmission Question
Has anyone experienced this problem?
My car has just turned 8,000 miles..Today I noticed that after driving home from work, (around 45 miles), when I put my car in reverse and than back into drive....I noticed a rather loud clunking sound from the rear end.....
Anybody out there notice this....I'm taking the car in for a oil change and was wondering if anyone has had any repairs regarding this....Thanks in advance for any help/information 2old4this

Re: AT Transmission Question
No clunking here bro. All gears should engage slowly and smoothly.
You sure there's nothing 'clunking' around in the trunk?

Re: AT Transmission Question
Never had any clunking going into reverse. The clunk you describe sounds like what I used to get going from 2 to 1 in MM mode. But that stopped after I installed a ground wire to the transmission and after I installed a B&M cooler and a transmission filter.

Somewhere on this forum I posted my experience with the installation. The 2 to 1 shift is just as smooth as the 3 to 1 now.

Re: AT Transmission Question
I m up to 7000 miles and must say my shifting is not smooth at all. I figured thats just the aggressive nature of the car because I definitely feel the shifting my car. And when I put it into reverse I defintely feel that. I dunno anybody experiencing extremely smooth shifting on the automatics?

Re: AT Transmission Question
Well...I'll have the dealer check it out...
after I let my car sit for about an hour, I took it out again and tried to re-created the clunking/bang sound...and it went away..
This is going to be one of those annoying problems. The dealer is going to say......" I didn't hear anything", and then when I return home it will start clunking again...
Thanks to all who replied.....and after you've driven for about an hour on the highway, put your foot on the brake and put it in reverse....see if you experience this same drive line problem.. :>( 2old4this

Re: AT Transmission Question
This does not sound that unusual to me.
You said you went into rev and then right back to drive. Sometimes the drive line on any car will make a "clunk" noise if you do this to quickly. That is probably why you can't easily duplicate it. I'd have the dealer check it , but it is probably nothing unless it happens all of the time.
I really like the automatic on this car. It shifts very positively (not smoothly). That is a good thing!
Question: Someone mentioned that putting a ground wire to the transmission had stopped the 2-1 downshift clunk that seems common in MM. I don't understand how a mechanical noise can be stopped by an electrical ground??

Re: AT Transmission Question
I don't know how it happened either, but I definitely had the clunk from 2-1. It was bad enough that I took the car to a local dealership, and all they did was try and look up a TSB for it. I knew that there was none.
I had installed the ground wire not expecting anything, but the clunk became less pronounced. Then after the trans cooler and filter, it slowly got better until now when I don't even notice any clunk or harshness from 2 to 1 anymore.
Just reporting what i experienced. Not saying that this is the cure for the 2-1 clunk.

Re: AT Transmission Question
The clunking is from the drive shaft at the rear end....not up at the trans....luckily I'm not experiencing any transmission noises..(THANK GOD)...
Today after a 45 minute drive, I came to a full stop...put the car into reverse with my foot on the brake, and I heard a slight clunk....Then I put it back into drive and it was more noticeable....after the car sat for a few moments it did not make any unusual noises...so maybe the fluid pressure in the valve body increases with the constant driving, and then it regulates itself to a normal setting after the car is at rest for some time....anyway, I'm not crazy, I was shocked to hear that loud clunk when I changed gears.....I'll have my dealership check it out when they do my oil change....I'll keep you posted....dennis
