Help with gas tank problems

Many of us are having problems with our cars not taking a full tank of gas. There are many theories out there. My dealership is basically saying they don't know how to fix the problem as it is very likely a design flaw. I'm trying to encourage everyone who has had this problem to call your local dealership & have the car serviced to have record of the gas tank issues. Please call Infiniti's Consumer Affairs & report it. Apparently, I'm the only one in the whole country who has done this! Help! The manufacturer must take some responsiblity!

Is your tank taking a full tank of gas and not reporting it is full, or is your fuel pump shutting off before the tank is "full". Those are the two instances I have heard of, mine being the former which was fixed by the dealer. I'll post the entire report of changes made tomorrow.

Re: Help with gas tank problems

About 70% of the time, the gas pump shuts off before I've filled my tank to full capacity. I've also reported this problem to Infiniti consumer affairs some time ago, but they said that it was not a documented problem with this car. That's at least two in this country that have reported it...

Re: Help with gas tank problems

My theory is that the downward spout of the handle from the pump isn't flowing fast enough to the tank. My immediate remedy is to turn the pump handle clockwise so that the handle is at 9o'clock. This seems to let the gas flow and allows me to fill-up. Lately though, I know the tank is full, but the needle doesn't go past the full tank line like it used to. I took a trip last weekend and noticed it on each fill-up. I was getting decent mileage ..about 23/24 mpg i usually get 18 mpg in city driving.

Sometimes all I look forward to is the drive home..

Re: Help with gas tank problems

When the gas pump shuts off (as if the tank is full) it's always at 1/2 on the needle & this corresponds with the # of gallons on the gas pump. I've had the sensor & fuel tank replaced & it still does it. Infiniti's tech support told the mechanic to go with me to see "how" I fill up. I guess being a woman makes them think I don't know how pump gas. All of you think about this: Have you EVER had a car that you've had problems, especially consistantly, where you can't fill up?? I NEVER have. I'm very concerned for my G and others out there. We've paid too much for this car & it's not unreasonable for us to expect the car to allow us to fill it up!

Re: Help with gas tank problems

I would urge everyone who has the problem to call consumer affairs. While I do appreciate the suggestions for getting around the problem, it's not unreasonable to expect it not to happen in the first place! The only way Infiniti is going to do anything about it is if they get a large number of customers calling in about it. If they only recieve a few calls about it, they will asume it's just isolated incidents and ignore it.

After I fill up, the needle is always past the F mark.

I have the same problem, and a fuel gauge issue. Planned on going to the dealer Wend, but they said until its made official by a TSB theres no reason to look at it yet. They have already serviced 3 cars with the same problem, but wanted me to wait 60 days to see what Infiniti's going to do.

Re: Help with gas tank problems

I have the same issue. I just got back from the dealership on some other issues and they are ordering some parts to correct it. Once I know what they are doing (something with the sending unit) I will repost to let you all know. It will probally be a week or so.

Re: Help with gas tank problems

Had that problem as well, even with my older Nissan. Turned out for me it was the gas station pump itself. Changed to a different gas station, now it goes above the full line everytime instead of slightly below. If the gas station pump is equip., I always use the handle lock. Its something you can try while waiting for a reponse from Infiniti.

Re: Help with gas tank problems

I've tried many gas stations & had the same problem. I've used the lock & not used it & it still happens. My dealer has admitted to a problem with no solution.

Re: Help with gas tank problems

For people who are having this full tank issue, what year was your car built and what gas stations do you frequent?

Re: Help with gas tank problems

I've tried many different gas stations. I've even gone back to the same station and the same pump where I had a problem and NOT had a problem. It seems to be sporadic. One thing for sure for my G....it always stops pumping when the tank is only 1/2 full. Always.
