M3 question
M3 question
My friend has a 1995 M3. He says it only has like 290hp or something therabouts. Do you think I would be able to keep up with or even possibly beat him? I aint to shabby at shifting, it fact pretty good at it, so i figure i got a chance.
PS I dont race, but if the time should come, i might have to

Re: M3 question
If it's stock, it has 240 hp. If he has extensive performance modifications, I'd say it could be a close battle; more of a driver's race.

Re: M3 question
For 290 hp he will need more than a couple of bolt-ons. E36 M3's only put out 200 RWHP stock. Check out the BMW Dyno Page. Won't get up to 290 hp with an intake, header, exhaust and chip.
Find out if he has his car chipped(very important). An E36 stock from a dead stop will be dead even at the end of a 1/4 with you. M3's, 325's, 328's and 330's all pull really well for the power to weight in the first 3 gears due to tight gearing. Once they get up where the gearing isn't an advantage, the drop off quick. I ran a 330i and he could stay close in 2nd. In 3rd I pull him a little. In 4th I walk him. From a roll(60+) you will pull him. Anything above 80 and you will walk him. If it isn't chipped, see if he will run you from a roll for $. E36 M3's are speed limited to 137 mph from the factory, so it won't matter what's he's got in his car. We're speed limited too, but ours doesn't kick in until 155 mph.

Re: M3 question
The stock E36 M3 has 240hp. It's 0-60 is 5.4 seconds and I believe a 1/4 mile of 14 seconds flat. It would be a really close race. I used to have a video of an E36 M3 with chip, air intake, and exhaust, out-accelerating a G35C on the highway (this is a true race, too). It was pretty close, but the M3 pulled ahead...I'm guessing a stock M3 vs G35C 6MT would be extremely close.

Re: M3 question
I think you need to go to track with him and tell us, instead of asking us.
I'd like to know the results.

Re: M3 question
I raced my roommates 97 M3 about four times (automatic but has intake and exhaust). The first time was when i had just drove from VA to Florida and i had TONS of bags in my car and my computer. It was dead even the whole time. But the next time we raced i beat him...bad. I had a perfect launch and hit every shift perfectly. The third time i beat him again but it was much closer (this was from a roll and not a stop like the other times) And the last time we raced i didnt get that great of a start and he was right there with me until 3rd gear where i pulled a little on him....then we had to shut it down because we saw a cop. So to answer your question, you could def beat him, but a lot of it depends on how good your launch is.
