Utility and Lighter Plugs
Utility and Lighter Plugs
Does anyone know the easiest way to have the power remain on to the lighter or utility plug when the ignition is off in the coupe? I want to be able to leave my cell phone plugged in and charging even when I am not in the car! My last car had power to the plug at all times, and I think that it is weird that Infiniti wouldn't have it.

leaving your phone on a consistent charge (after its full) is very damaging to the battery, and assuming you are not going to be in the car you have no way of knowing when your phone is full.

Re: Utility and Lighter Plugs
it all depends on the car make, i prefer that it turns off, that way i can leave my radar detector mounted and so i dont have to turn it on everytime i start the engine (too lazy to hard-wire it)
plus you dont want your battery draining! its very dumb to keep anything on while the car is off...it might not be apparent now, but 2 years down the line when it is below 0 degrees outside, your engine wont start.....all because you charged your cellphone while the car was off...
btw we have 2 toyotas, rx300 and 98 corolla, they both shut-off the lighter when the car is off

Actually, I prefer the way my wife's Jeep handles power outlets. The cig lighter cuts off, and the "utility" power outlet stays on. So you can plug the radar detector into one, and the phone into the other.
Modern phones don't continue to charge full-blast once they're full. They go into a trickle-charge state that just keeps them from discharging. Also, Ni-MH and Li-ion batteries tend to discharge by themselves when not in use, and need a trickle charge to keep them fully ready.

Exactly Ryoken. I had a Durango and it was the same. Utility plug worked and the lighter went off with the ignition. So... my question still is, can I get one of 'em to stay on?

Yes, all you have to do is find an always-on wire. Use a tester, with the car off, test different wires and find one that is always on. Maybe the one that goes to the dome lights or most interior lights, then disconnect the switched lead to the power outlet, and connect a splice to the always-on wire. that should do it. I'm not sure about what guage wire (thickness) is necessary, but that's how it would work in principal. You might want to throw a new in-line fuse on that splice too since you'd probably be circumventing the fuse on the fuse block...or you could just attach the splice pre-fuse.

If you wanted to be really safe about it, you'd run a new line from the battery with an in-line fuse. It would suck to power your outlet on a line that can't handle the juice. Or siphon off power from one of the larger fuses on the fuse block. I know you can pick up clips at Walmart or auto parts stores that attach to a blade fuse, you just have to pay attention to which half of the fuse you attach it to (battery side or other side).
