Just got rear-ended!!!

Ok, so I was on the way home tonight from a night downtown and some dude crashes into my car at a stoplight. Totally his fault, he wasn't paying attention or something. I got his insurance, DL#, etc. Now I took a look at the damage and I must say, I am VERY impressed with the coupe's rear bumper - ther is NO visible damage! My license plate frame is totally bent out of shape, but aside from a small paint chip and a very small ding behind the license plate, it's perfect. Whereas the guy who hit me was driving a truck and his bumper was totally messed up.

I'm planning on taking it to the dealer and getting an estimate on damage first thing Monday -if I replace it, this guy's insurance is going to get a big bill. Hopefully it won't be too bad, but I thought you guys might want to know, the rear bumper on this thing is awesome!

Absolutely replace it. Make sure they put the car on a lift to check for hidden damage. Your bumper cover may look ok, but the absorber underneath could be trashed.

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

Thanks bigel - also, do any of you guys know if I can just approach the other guy's insurance directly on this or if I have to go through mine and pay the deductible, etc.?? I would rather not have to involve my insurance at all since it's the other guy's fault and I don't want a rate hike.

go directly to his insurance company. don't envolve yours unless you have to. i would look for a good body shop to do the work. my dealership doesn't do body work so i have to go to the body shop to have th ework done. good luck on repairing you ride.

Damen (or anyone else who knows), do you know if I need to have a police report filed in order to go to his insurance? How about an estimate of the damages?

Thx in advance!!

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

I suppose that depends on his insurance. We were rear-ended at a stop sign in my wife's Jeep, and the other guy didn't have insurance. We needed the police report so our insurance company would file it under "uninsured motorist" (which did not affect our premiums and had no deductible) instead of "comprehensive."

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

I think you should have called the cops, this way you prevent any issues with him not having Valid insurance etc.
Check under the rear, up behind the bumper and in the spare wheel well, this will give you an idea of any unseen damage. Remember the bumpers are made to pop back out, but the metal underneath will not.
How fast do you think he was going?
This really sucks, these types of accidents you cannot prevent. You have to depend on the next guy/girl.......

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

Good point Merlin...it may be that my bumper just popped back. Honestly I couldn't tell how fast he was going because I didn't even see him coming and then bam, he hit me. I didn't get whiplash or anything but it was a pretty solid hit. I will definitely get it checked out. I have all of the guy's info so I can still file a police report if necessary - is it necessary to do so? He even gave me the number of Geico and it checked out, so I think he is insured.

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

I would file the police report and call GEICO to let them know, they should then get you in touch with one of their appraisers and from there you can work it out where you plan to take your "G". If not the Infiniti dealer, try a Lexus dealer, since they do the jobs the way it is supposed to be done. Everything gets painted off the car, all trim etc is removed, they really do a great job.
Glad to hear no one was hurt, that is the most important thing, but still, he hit the DAMN "G"!

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

The way it up here in Ontario is its no fault insurance ... meaning that each person goes to there own insurance to get the vehicle(s) repaired etc .. BUT
the only one who gets their premiums increased are the individual(s) at fault .

So, if you were in Ontario then your insurance would fix it but only HIS premiums would go up.

What I suggest is talk to the guy and see what he wants to do... say look buddy .. your insurance can go up for good OR you can give me some bread to get this looked after and be on your way ... with no insurance involved.
Go over to a body shop dude and get a appraisal and see what the dude wants to do...
Get it fixed man, cause even though I looks fine ..hopefully not, but, if it happens again .. there may be alot more damage.

Take care G.

Re: Just got rear-ended!!!

a couple years ago me and a group of friends went to philly to check out the races (back when there were hardly any ricers) but anyways my friend pulled a dumb *** move by makin a u-turn all the way from the right lane. now we were on del. ave. if anyone knows what i'm talking about and some car going the way he wanted to go just smashed right into him. it was totally my friend's fault but he made another dumb-*** move and didn't call the cops until we all told him to. the reason we told him to was because when we met up w/ him after the accident he told us that the other guy didn't have a valid driver's license because it was suspended. what a dumb ***!!! so what i'm trying to say is that maybe you should've called the cops because you never know. you might just have bad luck like my friend and couldn't get anything from the other guy because he never answered his cell phone.
