Damn ice scratched my car
Damn ice scratched my car
i live in NJ, and there is snow/ice on the roads, making the roadway narrower, so i was driving and the ice scratched my coupe.
it's near the back wheel, on the ring of car body that convexes outward. about 6 cm long and .2 cm wide, and i see black color, don't know if that's the car body without paint, or that's the color of burnt from rubbing.
anyway i want to ask what i can do to fix this, there isn't any dents or bumps, from my observation.
and estimate on how much it would cost would be nice.
a friend told me i can get it touched up at next service, but i only have about 500 miles on my car right now, and it's a long time away, i was wondering if there will be any problems driving in rain or washing my car because basically the paint on that stripe is out, so i assume no protective coating either.
thanks in advance

Re: Damn ice scratched my car
You could try using a Fine Rubbing Compound to see if it is just 'dirt'. But you should at the very least touch it up with some paint. With the weather you are having up North, it may lead to rust, just make sure to clean it up real good before applying anything.

Re: Damn ice scratched my car
yea what he said... i live in jersey too so i know wat ur talking about... i don't have my G yet, but the '03 maxima i'm driving sure gets treated nice too. i backed up into a pile of snow before because i couldn't really see. i'm too small and the car is soo big. anyways it didn't scratch, but i took my uncle today to look for some scratch remover and meguire's makes some... we haven't tried it yet so i can't really give you advice. but i would try to rub it off really good. the maxima had black scratches on them and couldn't get them off so we bought the touch-up paint from nissan itself and it covered up pretty good.

Re: Damn ice scratched my car
Depends on whether it's down to bare metal or the primer. The rubbing compound will work if it's some black stuff (road grunge?) that's on the surface. I'd go to a couple of body shops to see what they say and estimates. Might be cheaper than the dealer anyway as it's not a warranty thing.

Re: Damn ice scratched my car
if you happen to use an abrassive compound, DONT push too hard when you are applying it, have patience and once its undetectable put wax on it and clearcoat to prevent oxidation..
Re: Damn ice scratched my car
so you guys are suggesting me to clean it then put something on to prevent rust, then at the next service i can get them to touch back the paint?
and is it necessary to go to dealer or body shop just to fix this one minor item? or should i wait for next service to do it?

i have decided to not go get this touched up right now.
does anyone know a specific thing i should put on the surface i rubbed against ice?
all the stuff i have says to put on a painted surface, but the problem is i lost the paint, so i don't know what to do, and i checked it again just to make sure it really is paint fell off, not just rubber stuff sticking on my surface, so guess this is serious.

Re: Damn ice scratched my car
I live in Alaska and that I know ice can't scratch your car. See, ice melts with pressure. So the rubbing action makes the ice give. You can dent and even trash your car against ice or packed snow, but scratch? Maybe there was something abrasive in that ice.
Re: Damn ice scratched my car
Do NOT use a rubbing compound. Use something like fine or medium cut cleaner from Meguair's. It's a cleaner with a very light abrasive. Whatever you use, make sure it's clear coat safe and work very carefully with it.
If the scratch is through the paint, it will have to be touched up, but hopefully it's just a surface scratch. I find it hard to believe that ice can do that much damage to the paint.
Good luck.

You'd be surprised what ice can do. I lived in Utah for 9 years when I was a kid, and I saw all kinds of wierd things because of ice.
