Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

My 6MT is the first stick shift I've ever owned... I've finally broken in the car (@1,212 miles on the car and letting her rip whenever I can. I used to always drive my gf's Civic Si manual, but the G is... um... 'slightly' more fun??! =D Ok,... MUCH MORE fun as I need a surgeon to remove the smile off my face at every red light...!! I do however, miss my auto just a 'tad' bit... being able to eat, talk on the cell phone, change radio stations while driving with my knees... =9

This being my first manual, what's the "proper" way to do a launch my car? Thanks.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

is it bad to hold the brake down and the gas pedal down at the same time before taking off in an auto transmission?

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

I wouldn't do it too often, but as long as you keep the revs relatively low, it shouldn't be too bad. Definitely not good for the AT though. I would do a search and then if you have more questions about it, pm gurgenpb. He knows a lot more than me about AT's and torque converters than I do. Hope that helps.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

With professional drivers at the wheel, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times & speeds are dramatically different (Motor Trend gets 5.8 sec. 0-60 with 6MT Sedan, while only 6.3 with 5AT). I have learned (the hard way) that to truly launch my '04 6MT Sedan hard, I've gotta turn off the VDC and not "dump" the clutch (goes up in smoke), but more of a 2,500-3,000 RPM fast but gradual release while simultaneously flooring it causes my car to leave HARD - and I can definitely pull a 5AT all the way through the gears when I do this (or at least the 2 5AT Sedans that have tried me).

Again, though, with the VDC active, the car will usually fall on it's face when powershifting to 2nd (that big BOG when the computer shuts down the fuel for a moment), and that's when the guy in the 5AT just motors on by - and you won't catch him afterwards, because there isn't THAT much difference.

I'd like to see where you got the numbers for that 0-60 (auto vs 6mt) difference. Father has been a motor trend subscriber for the past 5yrs, I'd like to look it up.

I know that Motor Trend has had a wide variety of 0-60's for the G 6mt ranging from 5.8 all the way up to 6.1.

1/2sec faster 0-60 is dramatically different?

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

MrElussive, "enjoy" is subjective. Definitely more control and fun to drive. But I think you missed my use of hyperbole. Without a great deal of practice, the 6MT goes wasted, and 9 out of 10 times the auto will wax a 6MT driver because most don't know how to leverage it's awesome power. I got the auto because I've been shifting for 9 years and my little ole hands just couldn't take it anymore. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy this awesome vehicle any more than the shifters. I was just pointing out that unless you really know what you're doing, the auto and it's extremely consistent use of a computer will most likely walk the manual. No need to disparage the rest of us commuters .
The epilogue.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Track times don't tell the whole story. A 6MT might be only .3-.5 sec faster to 60, but it will always feel like it's got more power in it's torque peak due to the absence of losses in the AT's torque converter. To put it another way, in a given gear, if you're going at a steady 4K RPMs and you floor the throttle, the 6MT will give you a harder shove in the back than the AT will.

On the other hand, if you're lower down in the rev range, say at 2.5K RPMs, the AT may well give you more of a "shove" because the torque converter will allow the engine to slip up to higher revs and/or immediately downshift where the MT is still locked in hard at 2500. As a result, in real world driving the AT may actually "feel" faster sometimes. A 6MT driver has to think about the rev range/power band he's in or wants to be in and manually select the appropriate gear. Flooring the 6MT in 3rd at 2.5K RPMs is going to feel pretty sluggish. It won't in an AT that's left in automatic mode

So I think the 6MT is best only for drivers who first of all really enjoy being involved in the process of gear selection (sure you can drive an AT in MM mode but it's not the same), and secondly for those who want the the crisper response and noticeably higher accelerative g-force that it can deliver in it's power band. I'm one of those drivers.

The G's AT is truly superb though, and if the above isn't all that terribly important to you, or if you do a lot of driving in traffic, skip the MT. It's a great car either way.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

OKEE mr. elusive...
for your info.....the only reason i didn't get a 6MT was becuz i have to drive through traffic every morning and every afternoon from and to school.....also i do not eat, talk on phone, drink, or anything while driving. i barely drink anything in the car even when its not moving.... you really sound ignorant....im a pretty moderate smoker and i dont even smoke in my g35 let alone while im driving...
so please stfu about why AT drivers bought a AT. everyone has their own reasons.....

Sometimes there's massive stop and go traffic on stop lights to my school. It doesn't stop me. If anyone really wanted MT, they would have got it. That's my rough bastardization of what Ellusive is trying to say.
