Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

ok.....my fault.....dragon....i thought you were talking trash about AT drivers....cuz there are some people who think, "if you dont drive a manual your not a driver".....

if i had exactly one million dollars i would seriously buy one 6MT g35 and supercharge the crap out of it with all kinds of mods and also buy a AT coupe or sedan....cuz this car is seriously ahead of its time.....i wish i had both

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Ahhhhhhh! What have I started? Dabomb got it da best. I was simply looking for objective performance numbers, not subjective reasoning for transmission preferences.

Maybe if I ask again, nicely. Please, can someone show some numbers. Lets see now, that's 0-60, Qtr Mile and Top speed relative to transmission options. Real world track info (reference dabomb) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Off the top of my head, the fastest non magazine numbers in the 1/4 mile that I've seen are 14.0x for a 6mt and 14.2x for a 5at. Top speed is ECU limited. I don't think anyone has actually tested the top speed. You're pretty much going to jail if you're caught at those speeds.

Love your post script! That must freak some people out! Too bad the only thing that is right(for me) is that I'm running XP. I always run a proxy, says Im somewhere in Spain. I have to turn it off all the time because of google, don't speak spanish!

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Car and Driver got the best 0-60 for the 6MT of 5.5 secs. Other mags got as high as 6.1, so figure 5.8 should be attainable by a good driver in a typical car after breakin. None of the mags got under 6 sec for a 5AT, mostly getting around 6.1-6.3, so like most people say here, figure around .3-.5 sec faster with a well driven 6MT. Note that a not-so-well-driven 6MT would probably tie or even lose to a 5AT.

I've never paid a lot of attention to 1/4 mile times (although I'm seeing a lot of info about it here) so I'll leave that to others.

As far as top speed is concerned both versions are electroncally limited to 155. A few people have posted speedo pics here showing them doing about 147 or so, some of whom felt the car had not yet topped out, so the 155 number seems credible. I'm certain I'll never come close to verifying that in my car however.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

Thanks for the hard data. I agree, having owned several MT cars, that driven properly they will edge an AT but recognize that at times an auto will be an equalizer against a less proficient MT driver. So, it looks like about 6 sec flat for an AT and 5.7-5.8 for a well driven MT, and mid to high 14's AT to low to mid 14's for MT in the QTR. . Thats close. As far as top speed, not to many takers. I've driven my previous cars 170+ too many times to count, so I'll post the top speed for my AT as soon as it's broken in. For the safety conscious I make high speed runs on empty roads in the country with no one around. Irresponsible, yes, but at least I am only compromising my own safety. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the input.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

If you are concerned about the differences in stock numbers, and would like to get better performance w/o compromising the stock lok and warranty, consider a grounding kit and a z-tube. That will likely close the gaps in the differences. Unless you meet a good 6MT driver who has done the same thing.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

It really is about your enjoyment of driving.......for me, shifting is like breathing.....I don't even think about it...it is just natural.
It can be a pain in stop and go traffic....but the good times make up for it.
It is the driver....not the transmission that makes the performance difference.
AT guys......motor on while I row thru my gears....Its all GOOD!

You are only young once.....but you can be immature forever!

I really wanted another stick, but after losing my *** on my last two trade ins I went for the auto this time. Here in Memphis, the 6MT dog doesn't hunt in the luxury sports sedan market.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

A whole other argument could be whether those 0-60 times were MM or Drive. I believe that MM is quicker than Drive. Its takes the car at least a 0.3-0.5 secs to down shift once your WOT. This is eliminated in MM.

Of course I know the 6MT is quicker per se..but how does everyone feel about the MM vs. D?

D. The computer is smarter and faster than I am. Plus, the ECU doesn't need Burrito Supremes.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

downshifting from 4th into 3rd (MM) gives me much greater response than WOT in D.

Re: AT vs 6MT Performance

It always takes the computer a second or two to downshift and for the power and accel to kick in.
