Every GM car I've owned does this, (says in the owners manual too). I vaguely remember reading about it in the service manual of my wife's Acura and older Lexus as well...

Basically it explained that when the ECU detected 100% throttle position angle, the ECU will disengage the A/C compressor clutch for maximum engine performance, or something to that effect.

It won't turn off the A/C light or anything like that, so it's hard to notice, unless you sit on WOT for a long time, and it's really humid out.

I think it also depends what mode your climate control is in, Auto or Manual, cuz I think on one of my cars it only disengages the compressor clutch if you are in Auto, but not in manual.

The A/C does however, KILL your performance... The car will be very sluggish.
This is true.. but like you said it is very minimal for gas mileage with the a/c on...

Sometimes I drive with the A/C on and the windows and sunroof open
Me too. Especially, when I'm going to the beach!

here's what you should do on hot summer time like this, if your wearing shorts, lift up the left side a lil bit then point your left vent with ac on downwards, wit your itchy sweaty ***** having the ac on would be worth and you'll be happy and never think of gas. Enjoy and thank me later

^+1 to the shorts thing.. Lift up the left side and have air circulation through your *****.. Fresh air enters through the left, toxic air leaves through the right.

+1

Yeah its going to decrease your MPG, but depending on how fast you're going rolling your windows down will increase drag lowering mpg more than the a/c lowers your mpg.

So unless its really nice outside, and I'm just going like 35, I usually roll my windows up and turn on the a/c.

i have to agree with you on that one even if its not proven to me its just called plain old common sense.

its a thread to post opinions and to learn theres no need to get smart if its ridiculous then ur own the wrong site buddy its good to save money when you have money you can only get richer.

My turn, I have a couple observations to add. 1st. In my Honda Accord having the air on decreased mileage by about 2mpg with combined city/highway driving. 2nd. when I floor it in my Civic, the air does cut off so that you have more power. 3rd. From someone who has always kept track of mileage, I've never noticed a significant difference caused by drag from the windows being down. 4th. I'm a G35 owner now and haven't noticed as much difference in mpg with the air on as I did in my Accord. Also, I've never felt the air get cut even when under full or near full throttle. Lastly, I've really not noticed that much difference in power with the air on in my G35!
