Connecting a Laptop to the G35 computer?

A friend of mine whom owns an Audi A4 was able to enable many differant "extra" features by hooking up what they called a VAG to a laptop and then to the cars computer. He was able to do all kinds of cool stuff like enable an EQ for his bose sound system and enable opening and closing of his windows from the Key FOB. Anyone ever heard of anything like that for the G35? Does anyone have any idea where I could get the VAG connector and software. I think he said it connects through a PCMCIA slot on his laptop. There is whole group of Audi owners in his car club and they have all enabled a range of options on there vehicles through this process.

I thought you had to have some type of stand-alone computer to allow interfacing with a laptop(?). But wow that would be really cool if you could do this

I saw it first hand. I am really pissed that I haven't been able to find the "kit". I think that like the Audi's there maybe many things that could be "tuned" or "explored". From what the Audi guys told me essentially with the connector and the Software your laptop is just functioning as an extremely fast VAG computer that any tech at a dealership would use to diag. your car. Grrrrr.....

I think you would need software and some type of serial or USB to OBDII connector cable. Maybe Sunpro makes one.

All it would take is getting the signalling (connector and wiring) right, then having the software to emulate the dealer's computer and communicate with the OBD.. I'd be surprised if there's not a gray-market package that does this.

I'd also be surprised if it's not the kind of thing your dealer would turn their back on if they knew you were using it..

I've heard people doing this with Z06 Corvettes too. Using the GM tuning computer that dealers have, they were able to turn on features such as auto headlamp control, and tire pressure monitoring that are features available on the C5, but not on the Z06. Turns out all those features were already programmed into the computer, but simply turned off. That tuning computer was big bucks though (about $3k if I remember). That VAG device you mentioned sounds like the same thing, but only for Audi instead of GM. There's probably yet another device for Nissan/Infiniti, as that kind of stuff is proprietary, unlike the OBDII monitoring, which is standardized.

I'm gonna see if I can talk to the guy who did the Audi's this weekend. Maybe he can tell me where he got the stuff from.

its vag-com by www.ross-tech.com. you cant "tune" your car per se, you can simply read engine data, manage features etc- I just came from a heavily tuned S4.

Could it be adapted to the G?

Re: Connecting a Laptop to the G35 computer?

If you have all of these settings changed, do you lose them all when the battery is disconnected overnight? Or does it have some kind of longer term storage system?

Thanks,

G35 Coupe/Silver/Graphite/6MT/Prem.Pkg./BSM - now (maybe) May delivery.

Doug.

I think it's stored in EPROM. Eraseable/Programable Read only memory. At least being a computer geek helps sometimes! If it's stored in EPROM then the settings would be saved. I think that wat it would get erased everytime the car goes for service since they diconnect the battery.

actually you sort of can "tune" you car, per se...at least TDI wise.

I hear they're working on a version for BMW

Vag-Com wont work w/ the G35, settings are stored in the ECU regardless of power loss
