G35c as a drift car?

Anyone considered using the G35 as a drift car? I know, I know - "What, use my beautiful Infiniti as a drifter???" I guess I'm curious because I was looking at an article over on IGN Cars and they were talking about Z drift contestants. I always thought the G drifted pretty well, based on my limited "parking lot practice", but I'm no expert at it. Plus, I didn't have a drift setup.. You guys think its possible to make a really good drift car out of a G35?

I heard that G will be better than 350z as a drift car. Problem is that G is too expensive for drifting. In my opinion, I would rather buy 240s and use as drifting car~

Narkotic joined a drifting contest with his G and placed I think second. He has a Vortech S/C and a HKS Ti Exhaust setup. Loud as hell but one sweet ride nevertheless.

Somehow I don't think that it would be anymore expensive using a G as a drift car than a Z - if this is the case, SOMEONE DO IT!

You know I remember watching a Best Motoring video, I am sure a lot of you have seen it (S2K vs G35 vs WRX vs RSX vs RX8), where the driver of a CB G was drifting like hell on the last leg of the track.. looked so effortless!

Re: G35c as a drift car?

The G35C would not make a very goo drift car for the following reasons:

1) Too heavy
2) VDC needs to be completely shutoff somehow. (I suppose you can always do the VDC-off + 2-3 donuts)
3) Need 18" rims to clear the Brembos, and tires are very expensive.

BUT......

If someone is committed, I don't see why you can't make it into a drift car. Slap on a supercharger, intake/plenum/header/exhaust/ECU/suspension/brakes/LSD/ and strip the hell out of the car to put it under 3000lbs.Then you'd have a mean drifting machine. The problem is that the 350Z is a better alternative to do since it's already lighter and has more aftermarket parts available. If you have $30k to spend on mods, I am sure you can make the G35C a mean drifting machine.

Re: G35c as a drift car?

G35c is a perfect drift car.
VDC OFF you can fully drift and do anything you want.
It will need more power than stock too create highspeed drifts and longer drifts. Its 3400lb and its fine for a drift car.
The G35's long wheelbase helps in controlling drifts and makes the car more predictable.

I'v done some slow speed drift at about 30-40mph and the car is very stable compared to my friends RX7.

If you watched the 2002 D1 japan season of professional drifting there was a 4 door skyline R34 Weight was something close to 4000lb stock ...

All you need to go drifting is...
-more power so something around 360rwhp
-stiffer suspension and lower ride hieght
-practice w/ junk tires and then buy good ones

SCCA is set to release dates for Drift shows and competitions where you can learn to drift your car. Scca announced last year that they would do this and the dates and places are yet to be known.

Blitz Nomuken ER34 Skyline D1 Spec Machine:

470hp - 2900lbs, and is considered to be one of the heaviest D1GP competition vehicles.

G35C:
280hp - 3400lbs stock. Definitely gotta go on a diet.

Re: G35c as a drift car?

Nomuken's machine is stripped and has major light weight parts.

I wrote "stock form" above

If you have the money you can get the g35 down 500LB to match 2900lb

the seats alone are 110lb according to infiniti service.

Re: G35c as a drift car?

Sorry to dig up an old thread...
But the first time I read some of these responses re: the G as a drift car, I disagreed with specific statements (re: needing more power), but didn't have the certainty to refute them properly.

Well, I just received my DVD copy of "Drift Bible" (which I picked up used for 10 bucks on eBay) and this DVD teaches all of the techniques and secrets of drifting from the Drift King himself, Keiichi Tsuchiya.

I highly recommend this DVD to anyone interested in learning every technique used in drifting, proper heel-and-toe shifting, and how to control your car (or any car) in corners.

The G would be a perfect drift car. You do not need a supercharger or any more horsepower. In fact, the 2 biggest misconceptions is that a drift car needs power and that it must be light... those things are nice but not necessary, if you know what you're doing. You need a good suspension setup, an LSD, expendable tires and TECHNIQUE.

To overcome the G's slight understeer, you need to kick the rear out (obviously with VDC off) and once the car is sideways you need to keep blipping the gas to keep the power on (otherwise the drift just ends in a skid) while countersteering. 280 hp is plenty. 3500 pounds is fine.

I'm not about to do any drifting with my beloved G, but my friend and I may mess around with his 240 which has a set of coil-overs, sway bars, etc. and apparently is an ideal drift car...

Have fun!

By the way, you can get this video/ DVD from the Best Motoring website or do like I did and find a used copy on eBay. They also have a new DVD which features the G35 called Skyline GTR the Prodigy Check out the cool trailer (under "DVD Titles")which shows a CB G35 coupe drifting.

Also, check out the trailers for Drift Bible. Very cool. You'll also see correct heel-and-toe shifting in this video trailer.

Yeah man I got that DVD too sick huh? You don't really need forced induction, I got another DVD where 350Z's don't use that and can perform crazy drift as hell.

Thanks,

Chris

Re: G35c as a drift car?

Yeah, it's a totally sick DVD!

Like you said, no need for FI... like there's that part in the DVD where he's driving a little NA grandma econobox with about 150 horsepower -- and he has it wide open throttle and is drifting it all over the track! He even said that it's more fun drifting a low-powered car because you can keep it WOT the whole time.

Re: G35c as a drift car?

Exactly it will take drivers skills to perform such a nice drift.
