Correct me if I'm wrong but not all M5s have the same horsepower just as all M3s don't have the same horsepower. It depends on the year of the car.
As others have said, weight also makes a HUGE difference. I suspect that the 02 M5 with five adults in it would have a hard time pulling away from a G35 coupe with only one guy inside.

zimbo, that's not correct. The E39 M5 always had the 394hp 4.9 liter V8. The E46 M3 always had the 333hp 3.2 liter I6. And the G35C always had the 280hp 3.5 liter V6.
Okay, I just looked at all these different 0-60 and 1/4 mile times from several different magazines for the E46 M3 and E39 M5 and the results are very similar. So yeah, I'm open to the possibilty that the G35C can hang with an M5 full of people (and maybe the trunk was full too).

hey 2.7t audi....your bragging about beating couple g35 drivers everywhere man...nobody cares...j/k....
but i wont believe that your car is faster than g35 until i get beat by one...and also those people that you beat, might have had enough experience to drive faster than a AT so dont say you can beat a AT without even trying....

I posted a thread back in december where me and two friends, G35sedan, 540i & 2.7T(respectivley) raced too Chicago, well stop & go, but my mates Audi was the slowest of the pack. The 2.7T might have the same engine as an S4 but does not accelerate or perform like one. No offence Audi mate, but your talking bollocks.

The E46 M3 are the M3 of model years 2001 and on. The E36 were from somewhere in the mid-90's until 2000. The E36 M3's had a 240hp I6 motor. The E39 M5's have been around since I think the 1999 or 2000 model year? And ends at the 2003 model year. Before the E39 5-series, there was the E34 5-series with the separate round headlights.

so last week..me and my homies..who woooo!!! went rollin down pch and stopped right next to an Enzo!!! so im like...pshhh.....i rev my carr..he revs his...oh the sweet sweet sound of toyota enzos...anyways...the light turns green..and he took off..but about 4 seconds into it..i caught up and smoked him!! thats right!! u saw it here first folks!!. (my car has 2 stickers..soo...2 stickers= 200 horses...at least!!) .so if u think about it...the story about beating the M5 is totally viable....peace out!
