5000 Gas Mileage

So i went to the dealer to get my oil change, at 3200 miles, i scheduled an appointment for an oil change, glovebox change(had some vinyl chips), and gas check. Everything went fine, they told they resetted the ECU, and tested her out on the virtual road machine, and said all C02 levels were fine and all things were where they were suppose to be. I was averaging 250 a tank no flooring at all, and they said you're not suppose to get 20 MPG until 5000 miles, i said ok. Whats the verdict on this is this true?

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

I have noticed about a 1 to 2 mpg increase around 5000 miles. However, I drive about 95% city, so others that drive more highway miles may have seen a more significant increase.

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

When I first had mine I was getting around 16-19 MPG. I am approaching 20K miles now and my gas is averaging between 20-23 mpg. Thats various highway and non driving. Sounds like he is right to my experience. Might it be some kind of built in control for a break in period???

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

I've only got about 3650 miles on my 2004 6MT but I've never gotten worse than 20. After only 1000 miles, I was getting 24 mixed city and highway and I just took a 500 mile trip and averaged 26.5. This isn't just poking along either. I don't redline out on acceleration but I also don't spare the leadfoot.

I have my 1st oil/filter change scheduled for tomorrow and I'm going to tell them not to reset the ECU. I get great performance as it is and I sure can't whine about the mileage. If I were getting the mpg you guys are, I'd be very upset.

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

I have about 3000 miles now and I've consistently been getting ~20mpg. After break-in, I drive pretty aggressive, but only engaged WOT a few times. Also, since I'm in Seattle area, I rarely used the AC, although now with summer coming, I'll probably be using it more often and will see how it affects my mileage. And I'm about 70% highway driving.

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

A) Why would anyone buy this car and then discuss gas mileage? Gimme a break.

B) I get 14-16 mpg, 80-90% stop and go driving. I'm reasonably conservative in shift points. Anybody gets 50% better than that in true, city, stop and go driving must have found one of these with a 4 cylinder engine. Pure BS. Ain't gonna happen.

C) I just crossed 3K miles. I have seen no change in gas mileage.

D) I DON'T CARE! Frankly, this car gets the best mileage of any performance oriented car I've ever owned.

E) If you can't afford to buy the gas for it, sell it.

And please, no more fuel economy discussions. Now, let's all run down to Quiznos for one of those delicious toasted subs!

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

I was getting 22 MPG @ 80 mph from day one. Since k&n and mobil 1 at 1k, can get almost 30mpg if i could drive 70mph. get 24 now at 6k.

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

Yeah, I took a little highway trip a while back. Mostly two-lane, average speed probably 70-80, got 23 mpg. Hiway mileage can be very good (at least to me). But here again, I didn't buy this car thinking I'd save money on gas.

Seems mutually exclusive to me.

Re: 5000 Gas Mileage

Roland its not about the gas mileage per say its about if there is anything wrong with performance, in that the car is getting such less gas mileage.
