Those who drive in winter

I would like to get your thoughts/impressions on how the G is in the snow, with a set of winter tires of course? It's the one thing holding me back from grabbing one up right away, as it will be my daily driver.

so how is it? good, fair, bad? something I should stay away from completely?

You already asked the same basic question here: https://g35driver.com/forums/canada/240380-winter-driven-g-owners.html

Get a G you will love it

Yes, but i was also wanting to hear our southern counterparts weigh in with their opinions. I would also be going for the coupe, which is a different story than having the X.

Really im trying to convince myself it will be alright, as i've always driven an suv for daily driver, and i gotta convince the other that its good choice over another suv or an awd car, ie a4

Get a Toyota Tacoma 4x4. It'll get you through any snow that can be thrown at you and the quality is far superior to that of a G35.

It's just slow as heck.

It's not the best car in the snow. I've gotten stuck a few times and needed help out of the deep stuff. And I have winters. I carry a container of kitty litter for traction incase I need it.

Get the G and spend a few K on an old Honda Civic or a 4x4 for the winter

The Coupe is no 4X4 by no means, but if you buy a quality set of dedicated snow tires, and maybe in your area studded snows, I think you will be fine.

I have Dunlop Winter Sport M3 snows, size 225x55x17's all the way around, and have had excellent results in the winter months in Jersey.

If you could afford to buy a beater, all the better. But, if your like me, Conservative driving and common sense will get you around fine during the snowy/ice seasons.

You may be better off with studded snows, since you probably get a much more significant amount of snow/storms then we do.

The thing is I already have a summer car, i've just always liked the G and its come time to get a new daily driver/winter driver and im trying to find reasons I can convince the other its not bad idea, but so far i'm not really winning the battle...if I could convince myself to like the 4dr I would be all over the X, but i just like the 2dr that much more.

Had suv's for yrs now, just is killing me with long distance drives everyday with the gas, but the need comes when i gotta bring my gear with me, so im in quite the dilemna

Another thing to consider is that the G35 Coupe is not really that good of a car in terms of fuel economy. When I drive mine super-easy, I can get like 23-24 MPG, but normal driving(I don't generally drive that aggressive) is more like 21-22 MPG. If you're hot on the gas a lot, expect more like 15-18 MPG.

I actually get better milleage in my Tacoma during the summer than in my G35(generally 23-25 MPG in the truck), but my truck is a 4-Cyl and not the V6.

Buy a good set of winters and you should have no problems. We had a record annual snowfall (172 inches or more than 14 feet !) and I had no problems; never got stuck and never lost control. If you are an experienced winter driver, RWD should be no problem for you. Just take it easy.

I'm in the process of buying a winter setup right now for my coupe. I expect good things from people I have talked to. So long as I'm controlled and light on the throttle I don't anticipate any problems.

I have driven my mom's G sedan through Cleveland snow belt snow on Michelin All Season Sports, and it wasn't the easiest drive, but got through fine.
I suspect that dedicated winter tires will do a heck of a lot better.

I have g35 coupe and it is the worst car I have ever had in the snow... last winter I got an integra and a jeep to drive when it snowed and sold them this summer. I now have a mk2 vw gti for the snow this year... dont count on driving the car in a snowstorm... get a winter beater.

I do rally racing and drifting... this is the worst car in the snow... my rb20(with 400whp) s13 and a welded diff is better in the snow.

I completely missed this part of your post when reading it....

If you've already got a summer car, I really can't see anyy logic in getting a G35 Coupe as your all season vehicle while living in a place like you do where winter weather dominates literally almost half of the year. The G35 Coupe is the type of car that you want to drive whenever you can.... but it's just not adequate as a reliable means of transportation when it's snowing out.

I'd say bite the bullet in this case, and just deal with driving another 4x4 truck or SUV in the winter as you have been doing..... or if fuel economy is a big concern, get a smaller FWD vehicle or even a Subaru of some sort(all Suby's are AWD).

Even though it doesn't necessarily mean that the car is intended to be 100% solely a Summer or warm-weather type vehicle.... consider the fact that both the Michilin PilotSport or Bridgestone Potenza tires that were the only tires put on the '03 to '05 Coupes from the factory are both exclusively performance summer tires...not all season tires.
