Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

I'm new here and I *think* this topic has not been beaten to death already...

Just wondering what you think about both... I plan to drive the car in winter so the G35 is a better choice but I had a 99 Cobra and a 02 Vette Z06 and like the punch of a V8 and the V8 SVT is easy to mod but I want to hear what you G35 owners think about the comparaison. (I've seen the C&D test between RX8/G35/SVT). I'm not sold to one or the other, just want to know what you think. The interior of the 03 Cobra sucks almost as much as the 99 Cobra interior, nothing compared to the G35.

Thanx in advance,

Sylvain

We haven't beaten this specific comparison to death but we have beaten the categorical comparison to death -

Pure Power (bad reliability)
or
Luxury GT Car

That's what it comes down to. You gotta priortize what you want in a car.

G35 coupe is a good balance between: styling, luxury, performance, & reliability

Cobra is just performance. Well, styling is subjective on both I suppose.

If you want to open a can of whoop *** on people, then get the Cobra. If you want a mixture of everything, then get the G35.

Re: Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

I was thinking about the 03 Cobra too before I bought the G. But I've owned many (6) Fords in the past and it was time to put styling, quality fit and finish, dealer quality/warranty, and better future resale value to good use. I'm not knocking the Cobra, I've driven one and think the perf numbers are incredible for a $35K car but it just doesn't compare on the refinement scale. Now if the 04/05 Mustang is dramatically improved and lives up to all the hype, then....???

Good Luck!

I agree with all thats been said above. I feel my G35 is closer to a BMW or Porsche coupe than any Amercian car I have ever had.

If your into mods, then the obvious choice is the stang. There will never be more mods for the G35 than the Mustang.

Another interesting place to look would be the new Pontiac GTO coming this year. An LS1 V8 in a nice looking coupe body is intersting to say the least.

i also went from 2mustangs(98, 99) to this, and wouldn't have done anythign differently- G35 is better than Cobra in every which way (handling, comfort, reliability, etc..) except for power....but really, unless you're planning on going to the track every week to race it, do you really need like 500hp?

I mean sure, it's nice to throw on a chip and pully and pull 600hp, but is that much practicle for your purposes.

Besides, after my last ford experiences i would never own another one

Go with the G if getting good numbers in all categories is what you are looking for. I think the positives far out weigh the negatives...

Re: Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

I bought a 03 SVT Cobra before I bought the G35. I owned the car for 4 months before selling it and buying my coupe.

I have absolutely no regrets with my G35 purchase. While the SVT is the best BANG for the buck the G35 is the best car for your money.

The SVT is tuned & built like a race car. If you are looking for a daily driver buy the G35. If you have other cars you want to drive 5 out of 7 days a week then the Cobra is a fun fabulous car. I can't emphasize enough how harsh this care is to drive. It made my 996 Cab even w/ 03 suspension package feel like a touring sedan. And as for driving, its a lot of fun but the biggest flaw is lots & lots of wheel hop.

If you want more info & opinions I can give you as much as you need. I can't recommend the SVT Cobra to anyone after driving it for 3 months. It is damn fast though. But if thats what you are looking for, step up & buy a Vette. Z06 will still kick its ****.

i'd be suprised if ford did something good with the '05 model.....they always seem to mess it up somehow

edit: like look at their '99 cobras- oops, we accidently lost like 40hp in them
'03 cobras had to stop production for a month or so

i'd be suprised if they get it right

Re: Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

True...they have made some dumb mistakes recently but...what's right about it on paper (and from the prototype) is that it's built on the correct platform/chassis, for once. The last 15+years of Mustangs are built on an outdated family-car chassis that needs to be cobbled together to be semi-efficient. Any perf car that needs subframe connectors when brand new to make it handle better is a strong signal that this car was not "originally" engineered to be a racetrack star! And while it can be a racetrack star (thanks to the killer mods available) ...off the showroom floor it lacks any sense of quality refinement. The 04/05 Mustang "should" remedy that but it'll probably cost more too. (I hope they don't mess it up)

Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

Well,

I will have to test drive one before buying.. Having drove a 02 Z06 for 5 months, I can't say "torque" is not important but quality will also be important and the built quality of the 03 Cobra is not what the Infiniti is for sure... I have a friend who works at Nissan and said I could test drive a 350Z for a few days. Is it similar to the G35 coupe in term of torque/performance or a completly different story since the chassis is different? I will *not* be able to test drive a G35 coupe since there is a "forever" waiting list here in Montreal, Canada.

Thanx again for all the comments,

Sylvain

Re: Thinking about SVT Cobra 2003 or G35 coupe...

Engine feel and transmission feel are just about identical in the Z and G
The only difference would be that the Z ride might be a little bit stiffer because of the strut towers....
The G handles slightly better according to many magazine reviews, because of longer wheelbase and true-coupe design, whereas the Z is a hatchback

Plus, the coupe has the strut tower in the back, it's just integrated itno the design.
