Composite Driveshafts

This post is not a for sale or GP post it exists only for purposes of gauging intrest in the following...
I have over the past few weeks been in contact with a driveshaft manufacture who might be interested in developing a carbonfiber/composite driveshaft for the G35 Coupe. Our discussions have involved only feasibility of production, however final weight and prices have only been speculated in breif.
I am curious if this is a product that any of you would be intrested in. For it to be worthwhile for the manufacture to produce them there would need to be an initial purchase of 20 units, a GP(group purchase) of sorts.

I will gladly be the point man for this project if there is enough intrests. Let me know what you all think.

Thank you,
-KFreddy

Re: Composite Driveshafts

Obviously there will be interest. However, its a No Brainer we want to know: How Much? And How much weight will it save? Buyers want value for their dollar.... These are 2 vital questions.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

Ditto on all the above. It's all about the money and the gains. $2000 for 5 HP? No way. $1000 for 10 HP? No brainer. Of course when I say HP, I mean less HP loss between the crank and wheels.

Speaking of which, I'd also be interested in tranny cooler mods or a mod that would cool the rear differential more. Biggest loss in my ride is the heat from my tranny.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

The 350Z comes with a carbon fiber driveshaft....I assume our G's dont? I haven't been under my car yet.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

The track model of Z comes with the carbon fiber shaft. Our G's do not in any model.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

hey catatafish, what do you mean heat from tranny, etc. does that actually affect performance? sorry if its a dumb questions, but please explain...

Re: Composite Driveshafts

The reason we have 280 HP at the crank and 230 at the rear wheels is all the stuff in between. Kinetic to thermal loss. In an automatic, most of the power is lost due to heat in the transmission. Keep it cooler, and lose less power.

I hope I have that right. If not I'm sure I'll be swiftly corrected.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

If I can replace my stock intake (including the resonators inside of it) with the Z-Tube and pick up about 5 hp how much is the cf drive shaft goint to p/u? The 350Z has the G35 by 7hp. Would this mod only gain the remaining 2 hp? I wouldn't think that the little bit of extra weight would translate into much...

How much longer is our drive shaft vs. the 350Z? Is it the whole 8 inches or is it shorter than that? Is our drive shaft solid or hollow? Anyone know?

301-bhp!!! ...and growing!

Re: Composite Driveshafts

I think the biggest advantage of a carbon fiber driveshaft is that if you have modifed car and the driveshaft breaks....it will be a lot safer. You don't even need a safety loop. A friend of mine broke his ACPT(carbon fiber) driveshaft on his heavily modified SS Camaor at the track and it just about disintegrated. Here is good reference page:

Re: Composite Driveshafts

Hey neff,
I remember a post by Q45tech on one of the pulley threads where he stated that for every lb that can be taken off the rotational mass at the crank, you might realize a 2.? hp gain. I'm sure that reducing the weight of the shaft may not have the same effect but it should have some + benefits.

About the differences between 287 and 280 for the z and g respectively, those numbers are measured at the crank so the lighter weight shaft of the z is not a factor in the +7 of the z.

Cat: some of the driveline loss is due to friction that causes the heat in the various parts. However, unless you reduce the friction that causes the heat, cooling the tranny from the outside will have little or no effect on power output to the wheels. In fact, it may rob power by increasing the viscosity? (making it thicker) of the tranny oil.

Re: Composite Driveshafts

I've had a tranny cooler on my car for the past 10 months. It doesn't give you more power, it's more as a safeguard for the tranny if you start towing stuff or if you drive the car pretty hard.
