Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

Someone else posting on this issue at one time on this or another G35 forum, so this may be a repeat. I spent 15 frustrating minutes at the gas pump today trying to fill up my coupe. When I pulled into the service station, I had just slightly less than a quarter tank of gas. So I was surprised when the pump shut off after only pumping 8 gallons. I tried repositioning the gas nozzle in just about every angle possible (without actually standing back 10 feet and aiming for the tank) without any success. I finally just gave up. It certainly wasn't any kind of defective gas pump nozzle: they are all pretty much standard. It was more like trapped air in the car's filler tube that prevented the gas from going into the tank. Has anyone else experienced this? Seems to me it could become an issue.

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

I had this problem occur to me when I helped my dad fill up gas on the coupe. The tank was only a 1/4 full and the pump stopped after 3 gallons. I was thinking maybe the pump was messed up so I just kept pumping some more manually instead of flicking that switch on the handle for it to pump automatically. I didn't think much of it until I saw this thread. Any others with this problem?

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

yeah,

It happened to me when I first got her, but it cleared itself up after about a week. Now just a couple days ago it shut off when I still had 1/4 tank left to fill. I knew I had more to go so I kept hitting the trigger and got a little bit of over spillage. When I started her up I still had 1/8 to go, even tho some poured out... not sure whats up with it, I have my 15,000 mile check up soon so I will have them check it out

It happens to me and I have almost 10K in the car... It seems not to happen if the car is off. Are you putting in premium? if not, perhaps the car is telling you something.......

It did it back in the cold weather. Here in Joisey, they fill it for you. The Russian guy at the pump looked at me and said "No problem" and he turned the nozzle upside down and it filled up as normal.

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

i had a problem this past weekend filling up at the sunoco that i always went to with my IS and never had a problem. there, the nozzles are enveloped in the black springy tubing and it wouldnt pump any gas in at all and after 3-4 tries at 2 different pumps i drove down to a shell where the pumps just have the bare metal nozzle and it worked fine.

i've filled up at mobil's too, their nozzles also dont have that rubber springy thing -- maybe that has something to do with it

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

I went to my usual Mobil with 1/8 tank b4 going to Vegas a couple of weeks a go and the pump stopped after 5 gallons. My G has about 7K mi and this is the first time its happened to me. I stopped on the way to Vegas at another Mobil and it filled up just fine. A few days ago I went back to my usual Mobil (used a diff pump) and again it wouldn't fill up...only 6.6 gal.
What's going on????

It happened to me once. Hasn't happened to me again but still concerns me. Glad that I'm not the only one.

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

The real point here is that this is a problem with the car and Infiniti should be contacted by all of us to demand a fix.
Yes it happens infrequently, probably only with certain gas pumps, and sometimes can be overcome by moving the nozzle around. But why should we have to deal with this?? I've never had this probelem with any other car I've owned and I'm sure I speak for all of us.

Doesn't Infiniti know how to make a gas tank properly?? To my knowledge Infiniti does not consider this a known problem as there is no TSB for it. Maybe the people that run this board could email all of the posts about this to Infiniti and demand a fix?.

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

my car does the same thing occassionally, and it never moves the needle past the full mark on my guage.....
this just started to happen to me, so I figure there must be a valve or something in the filler neck that isn't working properly.......

Another thread a while back had a theory that the neck of the gas tank would cause a splash back effect on the nozzle, and shut it off way too early.....

Another thread said there was a TSB for a faulty valve that they would replace to eliminate the problem.....

so far my car just seems to stop short of full.....if it gets any worse I will have the dealership look at it.

Re: Problems Getting Gas Into The Coupe??

I have this problem. I went ahead and took it to the dealer, the service manager said that there is no current fix for it right now, but it is because some gas stations (in my case Chevron) their pumps are not ventilated properly. And that causes for a mixture of air being pumped into our tanks.

Now I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard spot. My company pays for my gas on my Chevron card...but the service manager told me to try Shell. I guess I'll give it a shot once I empty my tank to see if that works better.

I always fill up at either BP or shell and have never had a problem. Also, always keep your car off when your pumping gas for those who don't already and when you close the cap make sure you hear it click close a few times.
