I think its more like a thermostat.

Cooling when the temperature rises instead of blowing cold air constantly.

...running the compressor less, saving gas, improving mileage.

Re: econo a.c

Ok I have been wondering a couple of things regarding our climate control on the same topic. So when it is in econoac the it is intermitently engaging the clutch on the ac compressor or is it running it at a lower rpm or what? I really don't know much about the ac compressor setups. Second when it is merely in ac auto, does it simply stay engaged but the blower just pushes less air through the ac evap? Or does it actually slow the ac compressor down to in rpm to save fuel? Or something else? I mean the system works, very pleased but I am would like to know the specifics =) Oh, but I do find it a little annoying that you can't set it to auto/econoauto and vent it to both the upper and footwell vents. Anyone know the facts?

Re: econo a.c

The ECON position reduces load on the engine yielding better fuel economy, but allowing higher humidity.
I use this position in all but the hottest and most humid weather.

As far as functionality goes, ECOM and full Auto work the same. They both regulate the temperature you preset. The only difference is like other had mentioned - it works in a more economical way than full Auto. Manual mode just blows cold air and you control temps and fan speeds.

Re: econo a.c

on a normal hot day (say mid to upper 80's), is it noticeable to the people in the car.

also, is the power drain/savings noticeable

although my car is 9 months old, i only have 2200 miles on it. drive it more now that the weather is nice. but i am still like a person with a new car.
