Did U Know Ur Lights Do This...
Hey,
You all know how when you're driving around at night and you have your headlights on and you "flash" your high-beams at someone to signal them to make a turn or to speed up or whatever? Well, did anybody know that during the day (when your lights are off), if you pull the high-beam light switch towards you to flash someone, the Xenon headlights go on and off with the high-beams! I knew that the car does this when it is off, but I thought that when it's on it only flashes the high-beams! Why the hell would the car flash the headlights as well? Doing this KILLS the life of the Xenons....so WHY would they design it like that? Or does it not kill the life of the Xenons at all?

Damn, i dont think anyone knew about this...lets hope it doesnt screw up our bulbs...

umm, my turn signal light is the only light that flashes when I arm and disarm my alarm.

I know when you push the Panic button on the FX, the Xenon headlights turn on and off. When I was getting my G, there was a FX outside being prepped for delivery and the guy was testing out to make sure the alarm worked but he just let the alarm go on for like a good two minutes as it just kept flashing its Xenons on and off....I wanted to tell the guy stop, lol.
Either way, why would the car do this? I don't think any other Xenon car does this as it is definitely bad for the bulbs. I can't believe I didn't know that my car was doing this...I've just been driving this car around flashing people (once in a while, to signal to them to make the turn) for a whole year, jeeeeez.

Yeah, this pisses me off during the daytime cause sometimes I want to tell someone to make the turn to get ahead of me, or when I see another G driver. Our whole lighting system is retarded if you ask me.

dyenboy, it probably does it for both (since they are both from the same company and just two different versions of the same car), but I cannot say for sure as I have no experience with the Sedan.
It's kinda kool that the Xenons and the high-beams illuminate when you "flash" them...makes it easier for on-coming waiting drivers to see that you're signaling them to make the turn. Too bad it's bad for the Xenons. =(

I knew but didn't hasve any worry of the lifespan on the xenon !?!? I found out by pulling it back in the shade during the day and it reflected off a sign. Anyway when can these burn out?

I was thinking the same thing but didnt post because I figured it wasnt important to anyone else!! Looked into trying to rewire the "flash to pass" somehow so it wouldnt flash the xenons.....forget it!!! no way in hell thats possible!! unless you can somehow reprogram the bcm!! did you guys see how damn sophisticated the headlight/combination switch is on our car? 5 wires going to and from the bcm controls like 20 different things....blinker, wiper, headlights, foglights, etc...cant even rewire the foglight relay like I did on my old car...so you can turn on the fogs with parking lights. oh well...i just hope this doesnt cause a problem say 10 years down the line. gonna be fun trying to troubleshoot this one.

This doesn't sound like a good thing for the Xenons, but what about all those BMW & Benz drivers? Aren't both their low and high beams Xenon bulbs?

GRider, are our bulbs really covered under warranty? Anyways, it's not only that. Xenon bulb performance gets hurt with lifespan....by decreasing its lifespan quicker than normal, you're decreasing its performance as well. Dimmer Xenons is the last thing we need as our headlight housings already suck bigtime.
GX9901, I don't know about BMW, but I know that Mercedes is actually smart about the Xenons. For example, on our 02 ML500 with Bi-Xenons it works like this. When you flash someone during the day (with your lights off), it uses the two inner bulbs (which also act as daytime running lights for Canadian cars) to illuminate when flashing. When you have your headlights on, putting it on high-beams just changes the angle of the Xenons (aims upwards, that's how Bi-Xenons work) so that doesn't hurt the bulbs, either.
I was always under the impression that when my headlights were off (referring to the G) and I flashed people by pulling the stalk towards me, it was only turning on the high beams (the bottom bulbs)....this makes MUCH more sense, don't ya think?
