Scrapes: Your worst

What is your worst experience scraping our low cars? The other day I was in an unfamiliar area looking at my navigation when I came upon a badly placed dip that I didn't see until it was too late. Is there a worse sound in the world?

Driving on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn, NY. Doing 80 eastward near Coney Island Ave exit. Lots of construction work going on. I bottomed out so badly.... I thought I lost half the things under my car. If anyone has driven on it, they will know what I am talkin about. It is like a roller coaster, but in a car... your car. Oh yeah, it was my Maxima... so it doesn't really matter =P

My last car had Eibach spring on it (they claimed 0.4 inch drop, but it was more like 2 inch) The car bottomed out on SoCal freeway at 85mph over a smooth dip. Two days later I discovered the fuel line is leaking and there is a puddle of gasoline under the gas tank.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

scrapes huh???
hmmm, just lowered my car with the eibachs like 3 weeks ago... this thing keeps getting lower... I scrape EVERYTHING!!!

I actually hit like some glass/metal object on 95 next to Balitmore and I heard it or my exhaust break into a million pieces. BUT, my car is still running fine so that's good.
2 days ago I went over this speed bump which I thought was pretty shallow. Nope, the scrape lasted about 4 seconds and everyone was staring at me.

But, the drop looks sweet and I guess that's the price we pay to be classy!

My car was alright, Maximas are made tough!

You can cheat steep ramps and speed bumps. Just go onto them diagonally. Have one side go over it then have the other side go over it. This way, you can spare your front lip the look.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

Bottomed out in a gutted out roadway that had a manhole which was higher than the road. I hit that and thought that was it for the car. I figured the tranny and everything was gone. But it turns out I didnt do any damage. Also one day I was drivin on the Grand Central Parkway and there was a piece of foam from a bumper that may have been from a prior accident. What seemed so minor and small, still managed to get caught under the G. I get so pissed with this car sometimes because its not even dropped and doesn't clear anything. One time a soda bottle (2 liter) got stuck under the freakin car. And also NYC roads dont make it any easier or better for us.

Yup, NYC is bad. Stay away from the Belt Parkway... far away... Some of the roads in the city are still cobble stone!! So freakin bad when your driving over something like that... Damn city doesn't wanna pave over it. What are they good for?

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

I was coming down a curved hill at sunset... Sun is in my eyes cant see to clearly. See something in the road, cant make out what it was. I hit them and it was horrible. I thought my oil pan was knocked off.... so, i turned off the car and slammed the brakes. While i pulled over, a family on a walk said i must have blown a few tires cause the noise was so loud. glanced under the car to see a huge rock. Look up the hill about 15 yards and see about 8 good sized stones in the road. The mom says," looks like some kids have too much time on their hands" I said, "****" Dented my silencers and scraped the bottom of my car. That X brace we have has a huge gash in it. Good News is: no oil leaking, wheels are fine.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

Omg, tonight in a parking lot I creeped slowly over a speed bump. I still hear a scrape as the middle of the car goes over it. How bad are these scrapes for the car?

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

i hate when they put new speed bumps on the road ..
which the speed bumps is the same colour as the road surface! i donno they forgot to put something on it or not!
they better put some yellow or white stips on it to let us know!!!
it is hard to see one during day time! even worst during night!

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

Depends on what it was that scraped.

Muffler, eh, probably not bad.

Painted surfaces, eh probably bad.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

Yeah, luckily nothing painted on mine has been scratched really. Beneath the front bumper is a little worn but not bad. The thing that seems the most scratched underneath the car is this small silver mesh area that connects two pipes. It seems to hang down the lowest of anything underneath the car.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

With my other car, I was pulling out of the bank. (I had like 4 guys in my car with me), I heard a scraping sound as I was going over the ramped exit. But it made the noise when I was already almost on the street. I was like, "Was that my exhaust?" I pull over, and sure enough my tips had nice scrapes on the bottom of them.

When I was shopping for a house, the realtor was showing us this nice house that had a really steep driveway. He was driving his wife's ES300. We got out first, and he went up the drive way. I watched, as he scraped the exhaust tips, then I watched in horror, as they practically flattened shut

One time I rented a car while I was in college. I was made a 3-point U turn, my going up a driveway. The curb at that particular point must have been 6 inches high, because of the dip in front of it. I backed out too sharply, and I hear a LOUD THUD. I look at the front, and there is a HUGE dent on the bottom of the bumper. (That you couldn't see unless you kneeled and looked under the car )

Also in college, my room-mate had a dropped M3. We were in Pasadena, and we hit a dip at like 40 mph, because it wasn't visible until it was too late. Sounded almost like the car self destructed. The front fog lights were both shattered. We went to a shop to get it fixed. They put the car on a lift, and called us over. Asked us what the hell happened. Pointed out that its a good thing my friend installed an aftermarket X-Brace under the car, because it had a huge dent in it. Said if it wasn't there, the oil pan would've been busted up.

With my G thouggh, I've only had one incident. I was visiting Bellevue Square mall. I was driving through the parking structure, and saw this big black speed bump. I crawled over that thing diagnally. When I got the front end over it, I sighed a relief, only to hear a scrape somewhere in the middle of my car.

Re: Scrapes: Your worst

My worst scrapes are on the WHEELS. So far only the front ones.

That's the only downside to low-profile tires with large diameter rims. They're vulnerable to curb damage if you parallel park.
