Car in port

I was told by the salesman today that the car is in port. I asked him where and he told me Jersey City, NJ (the dealer is in NJ). If the cars come from Japan, how do they end up in Jersey? Maybe a stupid question, but thought I'd ask.

Also, not sure how long it's been in port, but anyone else have experience on how much longer it takes to get to the dealer?

Re: Car in port

There is a port in NJ - they arrive by ship from Japan and/or trains from CA

Not long. I'd bet you'll be driving it home by this time next week if not sooner.

Re: Car in port

as blitz said, trains from CA. then i was told (by big dealer) that there is a process as to which cars leave the depot first. big dealer said theirs do. can't verify though.

but, if you were like me and ordered and waited 3 months, 1-2 weeks will seem like eternity, but won't matter later on.

when my car was ready, dealer said he didn't have splash guards. said i should get car and come back in a week. dealer is 25 miles away. i said i'd wait. no need for useless driving.
two hours later, they got guards from another dealer.

BASE ACURA TLX NOW WANT A G35 AGAIN THOUGH
Re: Car in port

When I was working for ACURA, i had a rare opportunity to see all the cars at the docks...I was even allowed to go on the ship and look at all the acuras hondas, toyotas, and whatever else was on there in the ship...It was SWEET...

Then at the dock...where they print the MSRP stickers it's also the same place where they put all the plastic on and the tape that protects the cars from damage during transport...

It's crazy...I saw at the time back in like 97-98 all these Integra GSRs..all blacks lined up in one row about 50-100 of them...in the same color...

Then I'd look to the other lot and saw nissan's and lexus...I'm like can i just take 1 of these? The trucks wait for their pick ups and I was the guy tha stocked in these cars when they arrived at my dealership....Once we had the VIN # - delivery was usually within a week and then the car had to be prepped etc...

You'll get it soon my friend!

BoBs =)

Re: Car in port

Panama Canal. That's what I was thinking. It must be cheaper to use a ship to go around the entire bottom of the States than it is to truck them in.

I should have asked him when it came into port, but I didn't. I feel stupid calling him back to ask.

I'll be patient. Was hoping to have it for the long weekend.

Thanks.

Re: Car in port

If it's so expensive, why would my car come from Japan to port in NJ?

Re: Car in port

Just a guess here, but a shipping directly from Japan to NJ via the canal might well be a lot cheaper than unloading the ship on the west coast, loading onto the (hundreds of) train cars, transporting them across the country and unloading them again in NJ. Probably less damage to the cars as well.

Re: Car in port

Muscarel - Did you ever get your car? How long did it take from when you were notified it was at the port?
I just got the call from my dealer that my car is at the Newark Port, but the ETA is not for another 12 days....just wondering if it really took that long for you to get your car. I've already been waiting for over 3 1/2 months, so I hope I don't have to wait another 2 weeks.

Thanks!
