that is the single most damaging thing you can do to your clutch. Keep that up and your clutch will be useless in a days.

ouch, not good.

Let him buy your new clutch, he'll figure out how bad it is.

I would think the small puffs of smoke and the horrible burning smell would give it away..... holy clueless driver

Re: Bad to use clutch to hold car on hill?

Your clutch wears whenever it is in use. Most transitions from gear-to-gear require only a very brief period of engagement, so there is minimal wear during daily use. But when you maintain pressure on the clutch pedal to hold a hill, you put the clutch into a state of continuous use until you lift off. Continuous use = lots of friction, heat, smoke, smell = wear.

The better way to hold a hill is with your foot pushing the clutch pedal all the way in, and your e-brake fully engaged. When it's time to go, rev the engine a little and release both the clutch pedal and the e-brake at the same time. Off you go.

I heard it's not too good to keep your clutch pedal engaged too long for too long

Re: Bad to use clutch to hold car on hill?

While it's very bad for your clutch to hold the car while standing in an incline, using your clutch to avoid rolling backwards when it's time to move is ok.

Instead of using the ebrake, when the light turns green, release the clutch half way out (or just to the point where you feel you're about to stall), and then apply gas while releasing the clutch all the way out. Doing it for split of second when starting to move is ok and won't damage your clutch more than a say what a regular shift would do in terms of wear. just an easier and faster way to avoid rolling backwards than using the ebrake.

However having said that, I agree with everyone above in saying that holding the car for long periods will greatly shorten the life of the clutch.

It's as bad as riding the brakes, except brakes are a lot cheaper. Tell your dad (nicely) that he's quite expensively wrong...

I wish my dad would do that. Good reason for him to buy me a Nismo clutch set and flywheel too.

Good idea... tell him to keep doing it till it's fried, then ask him to buy a new clutch and flywheel for your car =)

Re: Bad to use clutch to hold car on hill?

When I first started learning manual *thank God I did this on another car before the G35C* a sales person told me it would be a good idea to practice finding the frction point of the clutch by holding it on a hill. Not knowing jack about clutch mechanism at the time so I believed him. That night, I went into the underground garage and held the poor old Toyota in a 30 grade incline for approximately 2 minutes at 1800rpm. The garage smelled like burnt fish for the next 2 weeks and the clutch on the car was dead. So yeah, it's kind of bad for the clutch, believe me.

4 long periods, yes I agree that it would not be the best thing, however I think it is OK to use the clutch to hold the car for a few seconds like when light is about to change or waiting for traffic to go before making a left turn etc.

From the manual:

"Safe parking procedures require that both parking brake be set and transmission placed in P for automatic transmissions, or in appropriate gear for manual transmission models. Failure to do so could cause vehicle to move unexpectedly or roll away".

also

"When parking on an uphill grade, place the shift lever in the 1 (low gear) position".

I park my car on my steep driveway with it in 1st and with the parking brake every day and have had no problems.

Re: Bad to use clutch to hold car on hill?

my friend who taught me how to drive stick taught me how to do that, but i never really needed to... i started off by kinda heel toeing it to keep from rolling back, but now i can keep from even rocking back by just letting the clutch out slowly until it starts to grab and then switching to gas from brake quickly. Its not to hard to just get used to the clutch and do it. My dad when he had his 911 said that that was easy enough unless u had to wait long periods of time in downtown traffic coming out of an undground parkign garage with about a 45* slope. He used his ebrake in that case he said. So either way, but good lord dont burn ur clutch like that. It smells sooooooo bad. Ive never smelled my clutch because even after chirping gears or doing a quick launch (only done that twice), my clutch doesnt really smell at all. I smelled my friend's m3 cluthc and that was GROSS and bad. then one day he went to launch and dropped it at about 3.5k and it revved up to 7k rpm's before it finally dipped back down to like 2k and caught. (this is not good haha)
