2003 Door Locks

2003 Door Locks
I have the first production...2003 model year. I have noticed when I got my car that with the doors locked, I can still pull on the door handle on the inside and open the doors. Didn't think too much of it then, but just last week, I had G sedan loaner and the doors must be power unlocked before the handles will open the doors. Has anyone else with 2003 models noticed same thing? I'm hoping someone with 03 will say theirs requires door be unlocked first, as I think it odd that mine will open just by pulling on the handle.

Mine's same as yours -- and it's the way I want it in case I need to beat a hasty exit for any reason. (don't want to power unlock first then open door)
IMHO - it's much safer this way.

Re: 2003 Door Locks
thx for the reply. I just thought that since the loaner I had required unlocking, that maybe I had a warranty defect for the dealer to work on...seeing as how they just finished replacing my window motor for that intermittent up and down problem that a lot of other forum members have experienced.

Re: 2003 Door Locks
I have a 2004.5, so I'm not positive about the 2003s, but my understanding is that this is a difference between the Coupe and Sedan.
With the Coupe, you can open the door without unlocking.
With the Sedan, you must unlock first.

Re: 2003 Door Locks
thanks Dave and Caribblue-- it's entirely possible that the Coupe differs from the Sedan. I've forgotten now how my '03 Sedan was, so someone will have to check theirs and post here with details.
I've tried tracking the info down on my ESM, but to no avail.

Re: 2003 Door Locks
Is it possible that the sedan has a child safety switch which, if switched on, requires the doors to be unlocked by the driver (rather than just pulling on the handle)? That switch would probably be on a door pillar, or somewhere inaccessible during normal operation. I have seen such a switch on other cars, but it seems to me that they only control the door locks in the back, not the front.
Just a thought, I don't really know.

Re: 2003 Door Locks
Do either models have the auto-lock feature after 5mph?
I also remember the BMW's had the double-pull option to open a locked door from the inside.
They should try that for the G... Although, I wonder how many ppl have actually fallen out of their G while driving?

Re: 2003 Door Locks
hehe I guess I'm kinda an expert in this area....
Every coupe has the ability to open the doors at any time, even if they are locked. The door handle actually unlocks the doors as you pull it. All sedans require you to unlock first if the door is locked. All 350Zs are the same way, and so are all the Maximas I'VE seen (which is few). None of the Gs or 350Zs have a built in auto locking feature.
