G35c vs RX-8 in August 2004 Road & Track

just got my issue yesterday and they had an article of the G35c 6mt vs RX-8 6mt.

great write up, the G35c won in acceleration (5.9 vs 6.1 to 60 and 14.4 at 100.6 vs 14.6 at 95.6) and .92g on skidpad vs .89g. the RX-8 had better slalom 68.4 vs 66.7. the RX-8 had better stopping by a couple feet from 60 (110 vs our 112).

anyway, the RX-8 came in first because of the better gearbox and price and brakes, ride, handling. the g35c had better performance numbers and won in acceleration, fuel economy, exterior styling (lost on interior styling tho).

final score G - 573 points out of 600, RX-8 - 585.2 points out of 600.

The rotary engines on those things are awesome, but I would much rather have a G35 coupe over it any day. It's classier and sexier in my opinion. I can see the RX-8 becoming the next ricer car.

What great problems to have. I remember 4 years ago when I bought my last car, an Audi TT that the choices were pretty limited under $35,000 for a sporty car.

Two great cars. I just purchaced the RX8 after going back and forth for weeks on the two. I think the RX8 is more fun to drive alone on a twisty road, but the G35 is way more fun in a drag race with another car. I like the chuckable factor of the 8. I don't understand the negatives of the g35 interior. It's much nicer then the RX8 in my opinion.

I'm past the drag racing stage of my life, so the extra power wasn't a deciding factor for me. All things being equal, I'd pick the G35. But, the RX8s are being heavily discounted right now and I just had a baby. So, the $4000-$5000 difference in price was the big factor.

Either way, great choice. What a great problem to have!

Even though I'd rather have the G35 coupe, I do think the RX-8 is a very good car w/ excellent handling (better than the G35 coupe IMO).

Even though the Brembos are bigger, the G coupe also weighs more than the RX-8. The RX-8's brakes are pretty big considering its weight

Kids today! One race. I've seen Mazda Miatas beat Corvettes at SCCA Solo events. Driver bias, track bias, Car Setup all impact track performance. By the way, there are a couple vids of Rx8's beating G35 coupes running around also. They mean nothing.

You know, it could be possible that there is more then one fine automobile in the world. It doesn't make you choice any less valid.

Too bad the RX-8 looks so ugly. It is a real negative, especially when you look at the gorgeous G.

I still want to TD an RX-8. When I went, the stupid dealer wouldn't let me do it......and this is after I just drove a $60k M3 SMG!!! I said screw you guys.

I know....but you should see all the vids....the RX-8 was raced against RX-7 etc...and almost always came out last....and they were professional drivers too...

Re: G35c vs RX-8 in August 2004 Road & Track

Why is it that some people see fit to put things down just to justify themselves or the decisions they make? As an owner of an RX-8, I may be biased toward my car, but not where I see the need to bash other cars to justify my purchase. On the contrary, I respect the G35 and those who choose it so much that I was all for it when my brother-in-law purchased it (plus having the same cars would be somewhat boring). Personally, I think the G35 is definitely more luxurious than my car. No doubt about it. The G also "looks" more expensive. Sportiness, I have to give it to my car having driven both. It just feels more glued to the ground than the G. Now that's my opinion on the matter and not some magazine's or some video's. Before people bash on the 8 to make themselves feel better, drive one. Otherwise, can't we all just live in harmony?

I hear ya Sponge... imagine what the world would be like if everyone had the same likes and dislikes. The world would be one gray boring mess. I considered the 8 before purchasing my G earlier this year. Both were nice cars, but the G won me over.

We could argue the AT vs 6MT topic again, or even discuss which is the best color on the G. Hmmm, they are all opinion related issues too

Re: G35c vs RX-8 in August 2004 Road & Track

both are very nice cars indeed. i have also read some articles regarding RX8 Brakes are really good ones. the RX8 gearbox is made by the same company which produce gearboxes for S2000, so i dont have doubt it's better than the one G35. for the stlying, i think G35c is more mature look, meanwhile the RX8 is more sporty look. and it is true that RX8 always lose on the track, even though it is driven by the GT500 racers. anyway, Mazdaspeed's RX8 should be more fair to compete with s2000 and 350z, as RX8 is inherently "not fast but quick", which is a term that used by some of the RX8 owners

"Always loses on the track?" There you go again. Must I point out all the victories, grasshopper? "Not fast but quick?" Okay, I can live with that. BTW, I had looked at a Z beforehand and almost bought one but after driving the 8, it was no contest for me so I think the 8 competes with the Z just fine (wink wink).
