I agree with you 99atlantic on that. If the 6MT driver is really good and gets a good launch, then the 6MT will win everytime. But if he isn't then it could be close.
The biggest difference would be weight and less driveline loss with the 6MT.
But sheer peformance misses the beauty of the manual mode. Having the best of both worlds is what it is all about.
I think of the G as a awesome GT car more than a pure, all out sports/race car. If you use your coupe as a daily driver, then the 5AT is great because you can use auto mode and then get a great sports car experience in manual mode.
Now, if the G is more of a toy for you or you autocross, track day, etc then you should get the 6MT.

I had a loaner G35 sedan while my coupe was being serviced. I have to admit that the tranny in the sedan which is basically a detuned version of the coupe tranny was very smooth and very quick shifting.
It really is all about your driving habits though. I use my car as a daily commuter so the auto would have really come in handy and if it's anything like the tranny in the Sedan I'm sure it's very quick. But I bought the car as my first real sports car and I'm only 26. So I figured I would go for the 6MT.
I'll have plenty of time later for autos. Plus I feel like man sports cars that the manual tranny setup is easier to mod. There is nothing an auto can do in my opinion to replace a good ole' clutch pedal and short shifter on those lovely winding roads!

ya know, this is the only car i think of where the manual weighs more than the auto...usually it's the other way around.

heh well i think its because of the large brembos and 18's that come stock on the 6MT whereas the stock auto doesnt come with 18's and large brembos, so its a bit lighter

tried it today while taking a coworker for a spin. did not know how to work it allowed me to choose my gear. Intend to give it some more attention to see how well it works

This is my first car with manu-matic. I love using the manual shifter for lane changes to pass cars and I also use it for quicker deceleration for when I see a state trooper up ahead or the car in front brakes hard. Does the transmission wear out faster when I downshift frequently for braking and the rpm needle goes all the way up to 7,000?

I think the weight difference may be due to the fact that the 6MT comes with some of the packages standard that are optional on the 5AT. So the 6MT is weighed with those options on, and the 5AT is weighed with them off.

I would not use the manumatic to do engine braking. Brakes are cheap. Auto transmissions and engines, not so much. I usually slip it back into D to simulate pressing in the clutch. The only problem is I can't be sure what gear I'm going to get when I put it back into manual.
Also, 5.5 is not what you "should" get, it's the best time anyone has reported getting on a MT.

True, I think the average joe can get anywhere from 0 to 60 in 5.7s to 6.2s, it all depends on your experience, clutching and shifting speed, and at the right peak rpms to shift. And also you got to factor in the outside temperature, humidity, altitude to get the best times out of your G.

I agree with all of that, except that I use the manual mode for engine braking when I'm carving through the mountains all of the time. That is why its there, to give you more control in the twisties. The engine computer won't let you screw up with too much RPM and I think the tranny is built to handle it. Or at least it should be.
No different than shifting down to D or 2 when coming down a steep mountain. If you don't and your stuck behind someone, you'll burn out your brakes.
