Backup Key
Backup Key
I tried searching but couldn't find an answer.
I recently got a backup key made for my coupe just so I could unlock the doors if needed (it has no transponder). The key locks the doors fine, but it wont unlock the doors. interestingly enough the key works in the ignition if I hold my real key up to it and everything runs.
Does the door lock itself require the transponder as well in order to unlock the door? I tried holding my original key to the door and it didn't seem to help.
Not quite understanding how it can work with everything else and not unlock the door.
Thanks in advance!

Not sure. But I'm not too sure what a back up key w/o the transponder does. You can't really lock your key inside your car can you?
Buy a Howard key from ebay for $8, bring all your keys/remotes to the dealer and they will cut/reprogram them all for $60.

What I am ultimately going to use the key for is to build a flipkey out of an audi flipkey unit. I am going to use the transponder from one of my original keys to get everything working.
The reason I got a regular key cut is because I didn't want to grind and hack away at one of my real keys rather do that to a cheap key. (I still need to get the transponder out but that should be less damageing to to key then litterally cutting the whole thing in half).
I just thought it was strange that the key wouldn't unlock the door and was wondering if the locksmith messed up on the key somehow. I found it strange that it worked everywhere else.

Well just an Update. You do not need a transponder key to unlock the doors. Just in case anyone else is looking for that info. My issue was with the first key that was cut, I guess it wasn't cut down enough. I figure that since the door lock is barely used since usually the door is unlocked by the remote it had a tighter tollerance. New cut key works fine now.
