Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

Premium conventional oils have gotten better as the standards have increased in severity.
The spread between conventional oils and fully synthetic premiums has narrowed some.

For sure a fully synthetic might be safer in summer when most oveheats and damages occur. Or in severe winter cold conditions [mid Dec- mid March]...........but for the other 2 [4 annual changes] you could get by with premium conventionals.

You do regularly schedule oil changes on Sept 15, Dec 15, March 15, and June 15.........every 90 days don't you.

In a way I'm kidding but why not have 4 National oil change Holidays. Frequent changes are more important than ultra superior ultimate quality for most people.

Most don't realize that oil filters quit filtering when the back pressure exceeds the flap valve tension..........this usually occurs at cold start up and at speeds exceeding 55-60 mph [2,500 rpms].........more wear damage is done in the first 10 minutes of each cold [below 100F] startup than in driving 400 miles in summer non stop. It is the number of dry cold cranks that does the engine in not the 300,000 miles.

The oil pump processes 2 gallons per minute per 1,000 rpm roughly depending on temperature/viscosity, [thats 12 gallons per minute at 6,000 rpm] yet the oil filter can only filter 6 gallons per minute clean and new [no restriction]...............when ever you exceed 3,000 rpm the bulk of the oil passes un filtered.

You would be well advised to understand the exact rpm and temperature WHEN the [[YOUR]] oil filter goes into bypass AT what mileage [dirt level]. If you drive long stints at 80 mph regularly..........as it would be nice if the filter was working during your 8 hour trip.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

Q45tech.........
Your points are well taken. I always felt that frequent oil changes w/filter will always help to extend engine life and keep wear to a minimum.

I, for the most part, do mostly Highway miles @ speeds of 70-80 miles an hour. My daily trip consists of maybe 5 mins on the backroads, then 45 miles on a major highway at speed......

I often wondered about the oils ability to hold up to long term high speed mileage, compared to everyday stop and go traffic/mileage. I always assumed, mind you I said assumed, that highway mileage was far less detrimental to the engines components over stop and go driving......

Since I do faithfully dump the oil and filter at intervals of less than 3,000 miles, I once again assume that this routine maintenance is more than sufficient to keep the internals in good condition and minimizing wear at the same time.....If I am wrong...please advise as to the best method since I plan on keeping this car for at least 60,000 to 80,000 mileage.....(roughly 3-4 yrs for me)
Thanks

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

so basically, i should just change my filter after 3,000 miles. keep the syntheic oil in there until 5 to 6,000 miles. then when it comes to my next oil change, put a better filter in. is that right??

neffter= LOL!!

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

In 1991-92, I worked at Mobil Chemical as an intern/technician in Edison, NJ. All the scientists I knew there used Mobil 1 in their cars and they changed their oil every 12 months or 12,000 miles! Mobil will not specifically endorse something like this publicly, but it was well known internally that you can do this with no problems. I never asked about the filters, but changing that every 3-4K is probably a safe if not conservative thing to do. The reason they were so bold? Other scientists tested a Mercedes to something like over 100K miles without changing the Mobil 1 oil. They then measured pistons, piston rings, all the wear items; and they all still measured to new factory specs! No joke. Mobil 1 is amazing although I am more conservative than my old scientist friends. I am still running my 95 Integra with 153K miles, with no noticeable degradation in power, and I change my oil every 7500 miles (when I use Mobil 1 which is 90% of the time). I feel like my car will last me over 250K with no engine wear issues. I must admit though, that I did not change my filter in between oil changes, but I would not endorse that and would probably change it halfway between oil changes when I get my 2005 G.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

The problem is all filters use approximately the same release bypass pressure, so a better filter might be worse, in that it clogs to the bypass pressure faster.
Mobil 1 markets an excellant filter that filter down to sub 8 micron levels.

You need to get familiar with the "look" of your oil " on a "white paper towel" at differing mileages especially since some G35 engines use [burn] more oil than the previous designs!

Hard to compare filter needs without studying the main crank and rod bearing clearances AND NOTEING that G35 engine has extreme tight clearance compared to domestic engines.

What you could get away with 10 years ago, has little bearing with the post 2000 engine oil filter requirements.

We deal with lots of 200,000 mile [even 300,000 mile and a few select 400,000 mile] engines regularly! We have 4 customers with each over 250,000 miles in 97-98 Q45.

We usualy don't see an Infinti customer till the warranty is OVER.

200,000 miles can be barely broken in or end of engine life......not to say we don't get many engine swap jobs were owners DESTROYED their engines prior to 100,000 miles by just changing oil once or 1.5 times per year because they forgot.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

I've been putting mobile one in my car since it was new. I change it every 4k, weather it needs it or not. Walmart believe it or not is the cheapest I've found. They will do a full 15 point service with Mobil One for around $34, a bit cheaper if you just want the oil change. And they won't try to sell you anything you don't need. I do stand there through the glass window and watch them though, it at least makes me feel better that their not cutting corners.

Re: Mobil 1 Synthetic, how many miles??

do you need to keep all documentation even if you go to infiniti dealers to do oil changes for the 70k mile engine warranty?
