Automatic is less problematic than 6mt. As long as your engine is not consuming oil you should be fine with the 06 auto. I don't believe the automatics have the oil consuming problems.

What does the transmission have anything to do with oil consumption?

Auto 05-07's didn't have the revup engines, which are the ones more known for the OC issue.

I think I'm going to go ahead and narrow it down to the 04 6MT's. They'd end up being a few grand cheaper than the 06, and even though the 06 is nicer and newer (and probably under warranty), I really do not want to have to deal with the OC issue if it does happen. I don't visit dealerships much and don't want to begin.

Is there anything specific that I should be checking out when test driving 04 6MT's? Any issues that you guys know of that were big?

Probably the break wear. I've heard they go through breaks lightning fast..

check the wiki article on it:

Brembo brakes were removed for the 2005 and 2006 models, and the brakes were redesigned with larger discs and a different caliper design. This was partly in response to a number of complaints about the previous years' brakes, which included a class action lawsuit filed in California related to premature wear on 2003-2004 models
One reason to probably get a 2005?

im obviously biased, but IMHO the 06+ is like the top of the line model. its the way they should have been released back in 02 as 03 models. if bluetooth and the nicer interior dont do it for you, the subtle exterior differences should. i have an 06 6MT with 25000 miles and dont have any issue with oil consumption, although i havent had my car for all that long.

i think you should narrow it down by transmission first. if you want a manual transmission, get one. just be patient and you'll find the right one. if you want an automatic, same thing. but transmission to me makes MUCH MORE difference than specific years or even trim levels.
