engine air filter, drive belts

just came back from the dealer and they said that my air filter and drive belts need to be replaced. quoted me $290.00 for the job. i told them not at this time since i wanted to see my options.

instead of simply buying a new oem air filter and oem drive belts to replace, wouldn't it be better to get a z-tube w/ jwt pop charger to upgrade the air filter issue?

as for the drive belts, wouldn't it be better to just get a set of unorthodox pulleys w/ belts to upgrade the older drive belts?

i'm not sure if the increase in $ to replace/upgrade the parts are worth it. i believe the ztube and pop charger is, but not sure if the pulleys will make that much of a diff over simply getting just new belts. any comments?

Or you could take it to an independent mechanic. I remember my drive belts were $70 OTD and the air filter around $17.

the dealer will try to take of all your arms and legs if they could. i would say get the belts done by a mechanic like LjN 728 said unless you are planning to get the pulley later in life and if you do why not just get them now. for in the intake that is a must insted of replacing the filter. but i would say go with CAI since the objective is to try and get cold air into your engine insted of getting the warm one that your engine is throwing out but then again that is just my thoughts. after all it is your choice

Independent shops around here charge around $140 for all the belts to be replaced.

just change out your oem filter only.. Your airbox is better than any aftermarket intake out there.

as for the belts just take it to a local mechanic

Its not hard to replace the belts at all..took about 30 mins, and thats because you have to take off the bottom sheild. You don't have to take the front bumper off. Just do it from underneath the car.

^^^ taking off the bumper is a piece of cake, i know that, i meant replacing the actual belts. if you would be able to acces them by just taking off the bumper and if there was anything i needed to know that will help me in installing the new belts.

oh ok, ill try that method, did you come across the problem with the belts making a squeeling noise st start-up? I read that this is caused when the belts are too lose or too tight.

I did, thats why I replaced them..they were all cracked too, so I figured with 80,000 miles on my car it wouldn't hurt.
