i always wondered what the best time to shift was while racing or getting on it mines at 7100 or 7200 depending on how my car feels

Yeah, the shift light is pretty much useless. Real shift lights are huge, bright, and obnoxious. They are like this so that one doesn't have to take their eyes off of the track to check the tach and shift, one can just see it out of the corner of his/her eye. That little red shift light is too small and too dim to matter in my opinion. I set mine at 8000 too, because I don't use it.

Mine is also at 8k because I don't use it. When I bought the car, it was set at 2-3k or something ridiculous, so I had to get rid of it ASAP! It was driving me crazy lol.
lights out i think im gunna try that cause i sometimes over rev in first but in 2-6 7200 is great
try it out work great for me..
I also adjusted my clutch pedal, so that might make a slight difference in shifting.

Ditto . . . lol . . . If you're waiting for a light to tell you when to shift, you might as well be driving an automatic. For whatever reason, if that light goes out, bad things are going to happen while waiting for it to come on. Originally Posted by idiosyncratic

Driving by feel and sound is my preferred way of driving a manual. Been doing it this way for 30+ years. I hope people are not staring at their instrument pods, while driving, looking for the next shift indication.
