Re: VTEC question

yes, this is very true, haha. both my accords had VTEC motors, this V6 has VTEC-E, and thats exactly what it is. after a particular rpm, like the article says, the car all of a sudden has a nice burst of power.

the problem? theres no power before that! my Accord V6 is a DOG below 3500 rpms. so the wonderful cars SEEM all good with decent HP numbers, but the HP and TQ arent useable until higher RPMs, which does no one any good!

i-VTEC is better, because i BELIEVE that might be infinitiley variable, which of course BMW has been doing for years.

Re: VTEC question

I second that! but, don't under estimate the power of Vtec.

Re: VTEC question

The AV6 is a single stage VTEC so the effect of increasing RPM VTEC crossover is minimal.

If you drive any DOHC VTEC application (S2k, GSR, 5G Lude, ITR, etc,...), you'll really findout the definition of VTEC kickin. With iVTEC (i.e.: RSX-S) , the effect is less dramatic but equally effective.

That said, it's only a substitute for boost if you were only running 2-3psi; and I dont believe anyone runs boost that low.

Peace.

Re: VTEC question

Don't our cars (as well as many new sporty engines) come with our (infiniti's) own version of VTEC? Some sort of variable valve timing that allows for increased airflow. I figured thats why our car pulls harder in the 3500+ rpm sweetspot.

Re: VTEC question

if vtec stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control, shouldn't it be V V T L E C?

Re: VTEC question

No USDM Nissan's have VVL (Nissan's version of vtec). The only motors I'm aware of that have this technology is the FWD SR motors. The motor designation is V (like D is for dual overhead cam, T is for turbocharged, R is for supercharged, etc..)
Everyone confuses VTC (valve timing control) with VVL, but they are very different.
Here's a good site from Nissan about VVL technology setup. http://babelfish.altavista.com/urltr...p=ja_en&tt=url

These motors are starting to come over to the US, there have been a few over here for a couple years now (I've had my SR20VE for about 1.5 years now) and more are on their way. With very minor work they'll put down about 170-180hp and 145-150ft.lbs of torque at the wheels, with a VERY broad flat powerband. It puts down a lot more low end power than the standard US model 2.0L motor, so there's more low end and more top end. Nissan's are known for torque though too, unlike Honda. With just a simple cam change 200+whp is very easily obtainable, with some internal mods 250+whp and a huge jump in torque (from more displacement) isn't out of the question either. It Just takes a some money for bottom end work. Here's an old dyno (i'm making more power now), but it gives you an idea of the powerband...

The motor is completely stock internally, doesn't have any motor specific modifications, only a normal USDM intake, header and exhaust. My car weighs in at 2685lbs and others who go drag racing in their SE-R's (I personally prefer the road course) have seen up to 100mph trap speeds, so it'll easily hang with most cars out there, G35 included.

I attached another dyno to the post... check out the a/f ratio, that's just with a Jim Wolf Technology ECU... no piggyback, AFPR, etc.. Gotta love it =)
